Castle Coole
Castle Coole is one of many National Trust properties
Situated about 1/2 mile from the town of Enniskillen, and only a short distance off the main Belfast road
Castle Coole is regarded as one of the finest neo-classical
houses in Ireland, designed by James Watt and completed in 1793.
The pleasant setting of the house is on a gradual slope to a nearby lake
in the grounds of the estate. The central block contains formal rooms,
flanked by two single storey wings containing the family rooms.
In the 1980s it was restored to be almost like its early-19C appearance
by the recladding of the exterior, using the original or new Portland
stone, and by the redecoration of the interior, in accordance with
the original intentions of Watt or of Preston, one of the
leading Dublin upholsterers of the period, who refurbished the interior
between 1807 and 1825.
The stable yards (restored) which were built out of sight below the level
of the house and linked to it by a tunnel, were designed in1817
by Richard Morrison
Tours of the house are available and include such places
as the Library, Dining Room, Oval saloon Room, Bow Room and the State Bedroom.
