Enniskillen Castle

Up until the 18C the castle stood on a island of its own protected by a steep ditch spanned by a common drawbridge. The central area (keep), which is now occupied by a museum, incorporates part of the first castle, built in the 15C by Hugh Maguire. In 1607 Captain William Cole rebuilt the castle, which had been damage in war 1615 he erected on the outer walls a turretted building known today as the Watergate which is best seen from the lake (photo). There is no sign of the Watergate actually having a gate but may have be built near an earlier gate giving access to the lake. In the 18C the Cole family moved from the castle to their property at Portora and then to Florence Court. Under the threat of French invasions new buildings were built against the curtain wall west of the Watergate (1796) and along the north mote (1825)

This is the lake shore oppoisite the castle where the top photo was taken from. The wooden platforms make a popular fishing spot as you can see here.
