The Insihowen Peninsula is triangular in shape, flanked on the east side by Lough Foyle and on the west by the beautiful Lough Swilly; projecting from the north coast into the wild Atlantic Ocean is Malin Head, the most northerly point in Ireland.

Greencastle Village

Greencastle, a beautiful little seaside-fishing village is situated on the east side of the Inishowen Peninsula, at the narrow mouth of Lough Foyle overlooking Magilligan point. On this side of the peninsula there are a number of coastal villages of which three begin with a colour and end with the word"castle",Greencastle is the most northernly, the other two are "Redcastle" and Whitecastle. Because The Innishowen peninsula has approximately 100 miles of coast line it is also known as "The Inishowen 100". A little ferry has recently began to sail with peirs constructed (2002) to take you and you'r car back and forth from Magilligan point. The best beaches in Northern Ireland exist close to Magilligan. By using this little ferry service motorists will save around 50 miles of their journey.

Derry/Londonderry, a north-south border town, the second largest city in Northern Ireland is only 30 minutes drive from Greencastle, situated about 25 miles south, along the shores of Lough Foyle. A very intresting city with it's famous City Walls, Museums, Theatres, Restaurants as well as good shopping.

Golf

There is a fine 18 hole golf course close by, whilst a 40 minute drive will bring you to the now world famous 36 hole course at Ballyliffin.

Castle ruins & Fort

On the north side of town stands a 13C overgrown, castle ruins built by Richard de Burgo, the Red Earl of Ulster, so-called because of his florid complexion. It was captured by Edward Bruce in 1316, fell into the possession of the O'Donnells in the 14C then was granted to Sir Arthur Chichester in 1608; the adjoining fort (1812) was used in the defence of Lough Foyle up until the end of the 19C.
