OLDERFLEET CASTLE RUINS
South of the harbour there is a spit of land called Curran Point here stands the ruins of a square, four-storey 16C tower house now called Olderfleet Castle (derived from Wulfrichford) although its orignal name was Coraine; it was one of three castles that protected the entrance of the lough in the early 17C.
Edward Bruce, the last Irish King, landed here in
1315 with his Scots army to free Ireland from English rule.
In 1568 Queen Elizabeth appointed Moyses Hill, who was Governor
of Olderfleet Castle to defend Ireland against the Scots.
