Warrenpoint, Near Newry, Co Down
The Castle occupies an attractive and strategic site on a promontory commanding the mouth of the River Newry where it enters Carlingford Lough. The Castle was built in the 1650s as an English garrison at the cost of £361 3s 6d (361pounds 4shilling and 6pence). Although restored it is an excellent example of a tower house, complete with its bawn. The entrance to the three storeyed tower is like some other castles in Ireland being defended by a murder hole, immediately above the door. On the first floor the wicker centering, used in recent restoration of the windows, has been left in place to illustrate this paculiarly Irish technique. From the narrow windows there are fine views of the river, north towards Newry town.
