Town In Neighbouring Republic Of Ireland
Co Sligo
Introduction
Sligo Town, (Sligeach)
Sligo on the
west coast of Ireland is a pretty large market town. The river Garavogue
tumbles over rocks and ledges before flowing into the eastuary.Bold limestone
hills dominate it to the north, while on the east side is the picturesque Lough
Gill around which the most beautiful senery in Co Sligo is found. The
beauty of the landscape is reflected in the poetry of WB Yates and in the painting
of his brother, JB Yates. They often spent their summer with the Pollexfen
cousins at Elsinore lodge on Rosses Point in Sligo. W B Yates recorded
in verse his visits to Lessadell House on Drumcliff bay.
In 807 Sligo was plundered by the Vikings; Followed by the the Norman invasion
in the 13C it was granted to Maurice Fiitzgerald who built a castle and abbey;
for 200 years it's possession by the O'Conors was disputed by the O'Donnells,
later a fort was built by the Cromwellians.
In the 18C and the 19C Sligo was a busy trading post where many emigrants set
out for the new world.
This section will show you around the town of Sligo and the little neighbouring
village of Strandhill.
