Knocknarea Hill

5 miles west of sligo town close to the coast  at the small seaside village of Strandhill stands the beautiful Knocknarea hill (1078 ft).

Tradition says that Queen Maeve, a romantic figure of the first century whose deeds of prowess filled a large space in early romances was buried in the hilltop cairn here at Strandhill.

Between Knocknarea and a close by lake is a remarkable collection of "giant graves" thought to be the graves of Queen Maeve's chieftons but probably prehistoric tombs.

The east side of  Knocknarea has a gentle slope, and is obviously a better place to start climbing.

This photo was taken on a small country road that led to the hill side.

The Honeysuckle that grows in abundance throughout Ireland was to pretty to leave out of this countryside photo.
