What a nice guy !

"My brother was working security on his latest movie and Simon was nice enough to give him an autograph for my mother. He even invited her to come to the set in downtown L.A. where they were filming and when she didn't show, he got the number from my brother and gave her a call. This happened months ago and she's still blushing about it. "

Thanks bakhod for the news.

Bright stars in a dull season !

"Smith" (CBS)

Name: Jeff

He's got character because: Even on a show full of supremely nasty people – not just slightly greedy criminals with hearts of gold but honest-to-goodness sociopaths – Simon Baker's Jeff stood out. We hardly knew him, though, before CBS pulled the plug because of low ratings (and presumably pricey production costs). It goes to show that audiences want a little spark of pure, good humanity with their viciousness, á la "House."

Jeff's introduction in the premiere episode had our jaws dropping: After catching some waves, Jeff gets into a minor turf tiff with a couple surfers. It's nothing big, and he backs off their beach. Then he walks into the woods, pulls out his sniper rifle and kills them both. Entirely, utterly unnecessary. And thrilling.

Later, he wakes up in bed with a woman he doesn't seem to recognize – a hint of careless drunken sex the night before. This is a terrible, terrible man. You obviously turned the dial, but for all of three episodes, I couldn't stop watching.

'Smith' doomed -- for a while

Source:DetNews.com

Date:October 20, 2006

By Mekeisha Madden Toby

No one wants to be the bearer of bad news.

So imagine how thrilled I was when Detroit News reader William Graham called to ask me if CBS had in fact canceled "Smith," a highly stylized thief drama starring Ray Liotta.

The answer for the most part is yes, and that's what I told my new friend William. That was the bad news.

The good news is that CBS hasn't said it will cancel "Smith" for sure. It has stopped showing it for now, and that could change later, says Mitch Graham, a network spokesman, who is no relation to the aforementioned reader.

CBS's Graham also said the show could move to the network's Web site, CBS.com -- though it hasn't yet -- to finish out the season, or the show could move to another network. All of these are exciting and hopeful possibilities if they do indeed happen.

WHY SMITH DIED !

Source:TV GUIDE

Date:OCTOBER 23-29 2006 ISSUE

By Stephen Battaglio

On paper, CBS' rookie drama Smith looked like a winner. Executive producer John Wells put together a powerhouse cast, with Ray Liotta and Oscar nominee Virginia Madsen. The pilot , about a group of professional high-stakes thieves and the women who love them, cost more than $8 million and had the style of a slick, fast-paced theatrical film. But CBS yanked Smith after three weeks, making it the new season's surprising first cancellation. After premiering with 11 million viewers, Smith was down to 8.4 million by its third episode--in a week when the two shows leading into it, NCIS and The Unit, saw their audiences go up.

While network insiders say viewers my not have empathized with a group of ruthless bandits, the show's steep price tag may have hastened its studio, Warner Bros., to cut its losses quickly. Shot entirely on location, Smith cost upwards of $3 million an episode to produce.

None of that was lost on Liotta. But he believes the show's risky concept needed more time to work. "It definitely was an uphill climb to get audiences comfortable with this kind of story," he tells TV Guide. "I think they did a disservice by not allowing this show to breathe and for people to catch on to it."

Liotta, who already has an offer for another show, says the producers have to share the blame for Smith's failure. Even the cast was in the dark about where the show's complicated serialized story was headed. "Nobody knew exactly where it was going, and that brought about confusion." he says. "And it definitely didn't bring peace of mind at the network." CBS, Warner Bros. and Wells all declined comment.

If it had been up to Liotta, the intriguing tension between his character, Bobby Stevens, and his wife, Hope (Madsen), an ex-con who believed they were leading a straight suburban life, would've been more prominent in the show's early episodes. "We were dealing with life situations that all couples go through." he says. "This just happened to be a couple who steals."

Thanks TC for the article.

News from LA Weekly !

Completing the lame trifecta is CBS’s Smith, best known for its Oscar-nominated cast (Ray Liotta and Virgina Madsen) and its überexpensive pilot. Not since the old Miami Vice days have these kind of glossy production values been seen on the small screen: speedboats on waterways, helicopter shots, huge explosions and car chases (as opposed to the cheapo foot chases on the network’s better-viewed Numbers). But the show ultimately bored. Smith’s production was under way on the seventh episode when the series was yanked off the schedule, but it’ll finish out its full 13.

Were they seriously considering bringing Michael Vartan to ER ? --Marty

Yay! I see you've done some digging in this new site and came across that golden little nugget in a previous Hot Piece of A's. I know that Vartan was one of the guys the producers were considering (along with James Van Der Beek, as I mentioned). Producers just releasd a casting call for a "hot male nurse" who will be "very good at his job and very charming," and I'm hearing they want to go fair-haired this time to set the newbie apart from John Stamos and Goran Visjnic. I'm thinking...Simon Baker? (He's free now that Smith is a goner.) Anybody else care to weigh in below?

Thick as thieves !

Simon Baker describes it as a "traveling circus." And so far, he's enjoying his impulsive character's exploits: surfing in Hawaii (yes, that really was Baker riding the waves in the first episode),shooting a couple of surfers for kicks and stealing a motorcycle and riding it down the Venice, Calif., boardwalk.

"When we went to Hawaii, that really proved to me that they are really committed to this show," Baker said.

Although Jeff appears to be the group sociopath in the pilot, Wells warns viewers not to judge too quickly. Jeff has brotherly love and deep loyalty for Tom. Annie, on the other hand, cares about no one. "She's the kind of woman who would laugh with you one minute and shoot you in the back the next," Smart said. "I couldn't believe John Wells saw me playing someone like that, and it was [even] better than I thought when I saw the script. I don't feel like I'm doing a TV show, to be honest. I feel like I'm doing a fast film that keeps growing and keeps going."

News from TV Guide

New Season Fallout: Changes Everywhere Didn't take long for the first shoes to drop this season, did it? Let's analyze the moves network by network.

CBS

We start here because CBS has wielded the cancellation ax first, dropping the Sopranos-lite caper Smith immediately from the otherwise successful Tuesday lineup. Strike one for this season's new wave of serialized dramas. Crime-drama repeats (what else?) will occupy its slot starting this Tuesday.

I'm not terribly surprised. Though there was some buzz for the show and its very expensive (I heard $6 million at least) pilot, plus its starry cast (someone sign Simon Baker up for another show now!), Smith always struck me as an empty version of a Sopranos or a Shield, to name two distinguished shows with criminals as protagonists. The characters on Smith just felt hollow to me, giving us little reason to care or to root for or against them.

From TV Guide .

When good kittens do bad things!

when I first caught sight of sociopathic Jeff (Simon Baker) slipping Kitty No. 1 under that chain-link fence, I worried he was using it to trigger some kind of land mine or explosive device. Could Jeff be the most unapologetically amoral character on TV? And don’t you just love watching him? Even from behind his plastic mask during last night’s main set piece, you could see his sinister anticipation of shooting up that armored truck. You know deep down dude was bummed that both of the security guards ducked.

Bye bye "Smith" !

CBS has pulled freshman drama "Smith" off the schedule after three airings.

As of Friday, the crime drama -- one of the highest-profile and most expensive new series this fall -- was still in production. For the next three weeks, CBS will run repeats of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "Criminal Minds" in the Tuesday 10 p.m. time slot.

"Smith" stars Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Amy Smart and Simon Baker. After a weak start, "Smith" kept sliding in the ratings, most recently averaging 8.4 million viewers.

Simon on list of "People" Fall TV: New Shows' Hottest Guys !

SIMON BAKER

Smith (CBS, premieres Sept. 19)

Baker – who plays a member of a criminal crew in Smith – credits his roots Down Under for helping him tough it out in showbiz. "You can hit an Australian and he'll get up and just keep coming straight back at you," he says. And the 37-year-old married father of three is tight with the top of the Aussie A-list: Nicole Kidman is godmom to his youngest son, Harry, 4.

From People.

"Smith" review-Simon's Character

Perhaps the most usual crook of the bunch, Jeff (Simon Baker) first appears surfing in Hawaii, so supple and pretty that his rugged narcissism seems almost an afterthought. But, as he shows later in his dealings with Tom (advising him to steer clear of Annie ("Don’t do it again, man. She’s trouble, you know she is"), he’s sensible and focused as well, cold-hearted and sure he’s right. The fact that he’s a methodical, painfully confident hitman only makes his pathology make sense: when he kicks a one-night stand’s cat off a bed, then brings it home with him, his complications turn both more specific and more disturbing.

"Smith" pilot reviews!

Here are lots of reviews of "Smith" Pilot.

Three good reasons to watch "Smith" !

  • 3. Smith, Sept. 19 on CBS: Here are three good reasons to watch: Simon Baker, Simon Baker and Simon Baker...with his shirt off. And, oh yeah, the rest of the cast is pretty dang stellar, too, with Ray Liotta as a family man who happens to be a high-stakes thief and Virginia Madsen as his wife. Hands down, this is the best-looking new series this fall (complete with an scantily clad Amy Smart for the fellas), and the twists and turns of this Ocean's Eleven-ish drama will keep you coming back.

From E! online

Thanks cecihz !

  • Just when we thought Australian Simon Baker ("The Guardian") had gone home, he shows up on CBS’ series, “Smith.” The John Wells-produced drama stars Ray Liotta as a loving family man who plots high-stakes robberies in his spare time. Baker plays his nefarious cohort who is in charge of fire power. The Aussie has been in the U.S. ever since he tried out for the Guy Pearce role in “L.A. Confidential.” (He didn’t get that part, but copped another.) After completing three years on “The Guardian,” he’s more TV savvy.

"Smith" news update!

  • Simon Baker, best known to TV audiences for The Guardian, plays Jeff, Bobby's main firepower. Jeff's life of crime supports his lifestyle of choice: surfer dude. However, he doesn't have the laid-back persona associated with beach bums. Give him a dirty look and he'll blow your head off.

 From Sun Sentinel .

  • Is it possible for a series produced by John Wells (``The West Wing'') and starring Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Simon Baker, Amy Smart, Jonny Lee Miller, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Chris Bauer to go bad? Well, yes, it is -- and it's called ``Smith.'' It debuts at 10 p.m. Tuesday on CBS (Chs. 5, 46). The creators clearly want this show about a band of high-tech, big-score thieves to be a network version of ``The Sopranos'' or ``The Shield.'' But unless things change dramatically after the first hour, the show is so cold and emotionally empty that you won't care about any of the characters or what happens to them. There's a McCollum three-strike rule on new series, so ``Smith'' will get another two weeks. My gut, though, says things aren't going to get any more involving.

 From Mercury News.

  • SMITH DRAGS: New on CBS at 10 tonight is the stylishly produced drama "Smith," starring film actor Ray Liotta. Liotta plays Bobby Stevens, a criminal mastermind living a double life as a thief and suburban family man. Although "Smith" looks good, moves fast and has a great cast, the characters are cold. "Smith" wants to be a cross between "Ocean's 11" and "The Sopranos," but it's hard to root for the bad guys when you don't like them. The cast also includes people who have done better work: Simon Baker, Virginia Madsen and Shohreh Aghdashloo ("24" and "House of Sand and Fog"). Madsen plays Stevens' wife. She knows about his crimes but looks the other way. Baker is in his gang. And Aghdashloo is a crime boss who handles the stolen goods. The title comes from the moniker "Smith," which the FBI has put on the gang. By day, Stevens is a salesman (plastic cups). By night, he leads a gang that pulls off high-tech, high-stakes heists. He plans to give it up when he gets enough money to retire in style, but the FBI is closing in. A few TV critics put "Smith" on their top 10 lists, but I'm not giving up "Boston Legal" for this one.

From The Tampa Tribune.

  • Smith CBS Tuesdays, 10-11 p.m. Premiere: Sept. 19 Starring: Simon Baker, Franky G, Jonny Lee Miller, Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Amy Smart Review: This show's gang of charming baddies could very well turn Smith into a cult hit, but the involved backstories and darkish atmosphere seem likely to hold it back from mainstream breakout success. Liotta is the "Smith" of the title, leading an experienced gang of robbers through their criminal paces, but he actually fades into the background a bit when set opposite the glittering charisma of bad-boy Baker, the wry intelligence of Miller and the sharp-eyed beauty of femmes fatale Smart and Madsen. It's those four who give the series some serious sex appeal--a factor that should come in handy as a counterbalance to the careless violence their characters seem to enjoy. Bottom Line: Smith might not be Mr. Right, but it could be Mr. Right Now.

Simon on "Smith" !

"The show is a little unique to me because I was able to write each part specifically for an individual actor, except the part for Simon Baker, who I didn't approach because I had approached him so many times in the past and he'd always told me to get lost," Wells said. "I had specific notes for each character and then every one of the actors gave me input into who they are and their background. All of those things got worked into the characters.

" When he completed the script, Wells got a surprising phone call from Baker's agent. Sitting in his trailer after finishing the warehouse scene, Baker, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on "The Guardian," grinned at the suggestion that he had played cat-and-mouse with one of TV's most celebrated producers.

"I was a little skeptical of getting involved with something because it just seemed that there was a wave of procedural TV shows and I didn't want to do something like that," Baker said. "And I had a yearning to move back home to Australia because I constantly battle with quality of life versus commitment to career. But network TV is changing, and John Wells has the clout and a depth of work behind him, and this show doesn't fit it into any category. Those things piqued my interest."

"Smith" news update !

CBS' "Smith" boasts an all-star cast with Ray Liotta, Simon Baker, Amy Smart, Franky G and Jonny Lee Miller among its gang of high-class thieves. The pilot, also featuring Virginia Madsen as Liotta's wife, is worthy of the big screen. But, with its unrepentant criminals and no sense of humor, the series lacks heart.

From Richmond Times Dispatch.

If you've had it with all the shenanigans at Crane Poole & Schmidt, check out the series premiere of "Smith" at 10 p.m. on WBZ. Ray Liotta stars as a criminal mastermind who commands an “Ocean’s 11”-style gang, including the always-dreamy Simon Baker (last seen on TV as the star of “The Guardian”).

From Boston Herald.

"Smith" (10 p.m., CBS): "Heist" failed, so did the superior "Thief." "Smith" probably falls closer to the latter with its focus on character. "Smith" also benefits from a stylish look, but one wonders if that ambition will diminish after the pilot. Whether or not the exploits of professional thieves (played by Ray Liotta, Simon Baker and Amy Smart) will lose their appeal will depend on how much the writers make viewers care about these characters in future episodes. (Tuesday)

From Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

"Smith" (CBS 10 p.m. Tuesdays debuting Sept. 19) stars Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen and Simon Baker in a drama about big-time criminals who carry out high-stakes heists. I've always enjoyed those kind of movies, so a weekly drama sounds right up my alley.

 From Signa.

'Smith' "Smith" is nearly as plain and undistinguished as its anonymous-sounding title, but it does have Ray Liotta (most notably of "GoodFellas" fame) making the transition to TV with a strong performance as an antihero for our time: a thief who sets his sights on an art museum as the premiere opens. See, he's a classy kind of thief. No convenience stores or pawnshops for him. Although created by John Wells of "ER" fame, "Smith" limps when it should sprint -- and dressing it up with kinetic explosions doesn't help. (Tuesdays, 10 p.m.; premieres Tuesday.)

 From Washington Post.

I became a fan of Ray Liotta when I saw him play Shoeless Joe Jackson in the 1989 film "Field of Dreams." Since then he has been in many movies, maybe his biggest one being "Goodfellas," and has had many appearances on a variety of TV shows. Many of his characters were smaller roles, though, and I'm happy that beginning Tuesday, I'll finally have the chance to catch the actor on a weekly basis. "Smith," Liotta's new show about a ring of thieves who plan large heists, is part of CBS' fall lineup. Early reviews say these gang of no-gooders aren't people who we should be rooting for, but Liotta, the ringleader, and co-star Virginia Madsen, who plays his wife, somehow "draw us in and makes us care." I hope it does well. The series airs at 9 p.m.

From Honolulu Star-Bulletin .

Says John Wells, who's executive producing Smith, a promising new CBS drama starring Ray Liotta as a criminal mastermind: "You want to involve your frequent viewer and you don't want to push away your infrequent viewer. We spend a lot of time talking about it. We lay the entire season out on a big board."

ASK MATT!

originally published September 11, 2006

Question: One of the new shows I am interested in this fall is CBS' Smith. The cast looks great and the idea seems to have many storytelling avenues (kind of a mix between Heat and Ocean's Eleven). How far do you think the producers and writers will go in telling a story about criminals? Are the criminals going to kill any innocent people who get in their way? I think there is a fine line in shows like this, because you want the audience to like the characters, but the characters should be true to the situation. I remember the earlier years of Alias when Sydney couldn't shoot anyone even though she was a superspy. After a while it got ridiculous. If the writers/producers of Smith would use Jack Bauer on 24, Vic Mackey on The Shield and of course Tony Soprano on The Sopranos as guides, the show could be a breakout. — Mark L.

Matt Roush: I only wish the criminals in Smith were as fleshed-out, complex and compelling as the antiheroes of The Shield and The Sopranos, two shows to which Smith will invariably be compared. Not to give too much away about the pilot episode before it airs, but this glamorized crime team does leave innocent casualties in their wake. On the plus side, it looks as if there will be serious and dramatic repercussions for that. In the big picture, though, I don't think it's as necessary for audiences to like characters such as these as it is for them to care about the characters. And my big problem with Smith at this early stage of the game is that the characters left me cold, something I could never say about Mackey and the Strike Team, or any of the Sopranos. Not to mention Jack Bauer, whose primary cross to bear is the dastardly depths to which he must stoop to save the world. Smith is a lavishly produced pilot, but the real test will come in the weekly episodes. It's a change of pace for CBS, no question. I applaud the risk; I just wish I were more blown away by the result.

From TV Guide.

The five best new shows!

SMITH

CBS/CTV, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. (premiering Sept. 19).

PREMISE: Bobby Stevens (Ray Liotta) seems like a regular dude with a babe wife (Virginia Madsen), two kids and a nice, respectable 9-to-5 job. Except the dude is really a criminal mastermind (the FBI can't catch him and refer to him as "Smith"), pulling off impossible jobs with the slickest gang this side of Ocean's 11. Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), Franky G (Saw II), Simon Baker (The Guardian) and Amy Smart (Felicity) make for one cool, good-looking gang. Shohreh Aghdashloo (24) simmers in a recurring role as a mysterious crime boss.

IT'S LIKE: Goodfellas meets The Italian Job.

WHAT WORKS: A slick, rich, impressive pilot that never lagged even at 90 minutes. Executive producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing) admitted at press tour that the pilot costs were steep but at least it is all on screen. This show makes 24 look pedestrian, with high-speed boat chases, explosions and plenty of gory gun play. There's plenty of dark comedy, especially from Baker, which keeps Smith edgy and smart.

WHAT DOESN'T: Uh oh. CBS is cutting the pilot down to fit a one-hour slot. Hard to imagine they could cut a frame from what I saw last June. Likely lost will be the quiet moments between Liotta and Madsen, especially a sweet encounter at the piano. That would be a drag, because that's where this series really shone.

PREDICTION: Ignited by star power and plenty of pyrotechnics, Smith should start with a bang. Whether Wells and Co. can keep it up after raising expectations this high will determine how long this series can run. Plus Bobby's cliched vow that "three or four more big jobs and I'm out" is gonna get old by week 13.

"Smith" news update!

SMITH

Premieres Sept. 18, CTV, 9 p.m. (Also airs Tuesdays, CBS, 10 p.m.)

Grade: A

The Deal: A group of professional criminals -- always more entertaining than the unprofessional ones -- each with distinct skill-sets, come together to form a gang of high-end thieves.

The pilot looks like a feature film, with no expense spared on stunts, lighting and location.

While some TV writers question whether or not the public will warm to bad guys (why they question that I have no idea -- two words: Tony Soprano), that concern never crossed my mind as the show was engrossing and the cast, led by Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen, stunning.

Principal Players: Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Simon Baker, Franky G, Jonny Lee Miller, Amy Smart, Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Why Watch: The cast is to die for and, while the heists are up front, there's still enough backstory action to give the characters dimension.

From:Vancouver Province.

Anti-Heroes as Lead Characters

On the glossy "Smith," in which Ray Liotta's character leads a gang of experienced thieves, more than one innocent civilian dies in the course of the robbery crew's big heist. None of the thieves seems to have much remorse about it, nor does "Smith" executive producer John Wells apologize for the show's edgy tone.

"People are expecting something from serious drama, from, for lack of a better term, high-end drama," said Wells, a veteran of "The West Wing" and "ER."

"I think that we have to be competitive, constantly be aware of and competitive with what's happening on basic cable, what's happening on pay cable, what's happening on broadcast television, and what's happening in feature film."

from Press-Enterprise .

Smith’ (CBS – Tuesdays at 10) – Ray Liotta’s back to his old tricks again (being intense and committing crimes) in his role as Bobby Stevens on ‘Smith’. In the drama, Bobby joins up with his group of criminal-buddies to commit a few more heists before retiring and spending some quality time with his family on the straight and narrow. There’s not many shows out there where we get to root for the bad-guys. That happens a lot more in movies than it does in TV.

"Smith" news update! (Spoilers alert!)

  • I was wondering where this show would go at the end of the pilot. Would we have stand alone episodes (like Hustle), or is there some bigger plot going on (like Heist)? It's more of the latter, as we see why Ray Liotta is doing what he's doing, how all of the gang are related to each other, who likes who, who dislikes who, who are "good" bad guys and who are the "bad" bad guys. But I can also see where each show would be enjoyable by someone who doesn't know the overall plot, because each episode and each heist can stand on their own and be enjoyable. I really hope that viewers (and CBS) give the show a chance. (It contains small spoilers about "Smith")

  • SMITH – A drama about high stakes heists told through the eyes of the criminals committing them and being hunted by some unattractive FBI agents. SMITH is filled to the brim with talent with Virginia Madsen, Ray Liotta, Simon Baker and Amy Smart. That alone will probably drive a lot of people to this show even though it isn’t nearly as fun as you’d think. VERDICT: Given the star power, this one will stick around for the whole year.

"Smith " news updates!

SMITH The second-to-last series I wanted to like was this drama starring Ray Liotta. Why? Because do we truly need yet another TV series or film about master criminals pulling off elaborate, big money heists — or their leader mulling an early retirement from his life of crime? Didn’t think so. Yet as Smith unfolds, you can’t deny its clockwork precision. Liotta is terrific, backed up by an outstanding cast of pros: Oscar nominee Virginia Madsen (Sideways) as his wife, and as the members of his crew, Simon Baker, Jonny Lee Miller and the always-luscious Amy Smart. One hopes as the series progresses, the scripts will become as compelling as the stars and cinematic production values. (Sept. 19, CBS)

From Calgary Sun.

"Smith"-the title refers not to Liotta's name, but an FBI designation for an unidentified thief, and one that could easily be applied to one of the other characters, or a new leading man, if Liotta and Madsen were to leave after a year or two. Madsen says the actors are all continually talking with Wells about how long they want to stay, "and I think everybody wants to see where it goes. As long as I get a hiatus and can take that time off -- right now, I have a couple of movies scheduled -- I may be okay."

Casting Call: Lisa Vidal is set to do a multiepisode arc on CBS' new drama "Smith," playing a hard-nosed FBI agent. This past development season, Vidal and her sisters, actresses Christina and Tanya Vidal, were attached to star in an ABC comedy project based on their life. Vidal, whose series credits include "The Division," "Third Watch" and "ER," recently won an Imagen Award for her role in the Lifetime movie "Odd Girl Out." She is repped by Paradigm and manager Bob McGowan of McGowan Management.

Simon  is working less and liking it more!

The handsome Aussie was in practically every scene during his tenure as a trouble-plagued attorney in CBS' "The Guardian" series a few years back and was left exhausted. Now he's preparing for the debut of "Smith," CBS' weekly show in which he, Ray Liotta and Shohreh Aghdashloo play members of a band of thieves. And, with the action divided, he says, "I don't work every day. I'm quite happy about that ...

"It's a more suitable schedule for me — not completely overwhelming. It doesn't sit on my shoulders as the last series did, and it shouldn't. It's got great actors, and I like it when they work."

WB Digs Smith!

Short version: Liotta's "Smith" debut will come with only two commercials -- both promos for "The Departed."

Long version, courtesy of Variety: "Under a deal with CBS, Warner Bros. will use the premiere of "Smith," "Goodfellas" star Liotta's new ... drama, to help hype upcoming Scorsese feature "The Departed." Arrangement calls for the "Smith" bow to air with just four minutes of commercials -- all for the new Scorsese pic.

Making the plan possible: The first episode of "Smith" runs nearly a full hour sans commercials. (CBS) could've aired the pilot as a 90-minute special, but limiting ad time can be an effective way to draw attention to a show."

"Smith " news updates!

  • On the glossy "Smith," in which Ray Liotta's character leads a gang of experienced thieves, more than one innocent civilian dies in the course of the robbery crew's big heist. None of the thieves seems to have much remorse about it, nor does "Smith" executive producer John Wells apologize for the show's edgy tone. "People are expecting something from serious drama, from, for lack of a better term, high-end drama," said Wells, a veteran of "The West Wing" and "ER," at a TCA panel on the show. "I think that we have to be competitive, constantly be aware of and competitive with what's happening on basic cable, what's happening on pay cable, what's happening on broadcast television, and what's happening in feature film."

From chicagotribune.

  • 'Smith' Criminals have families, too—didn't Tony Soprano teach us that? "Smith" focuses on a more upscale team of suburban bad guys, but you get the idea. Still, it's slickly produced by John Wells ("ER"), and the cast—with Ray Liotta as the crime boss and Virginia Madsen as his wife—deserves a look. Tuesdays, starting Sept. 19 on CBS.

  • Smith,” CBS (Sept. 19): Ray Liotta stars as the head of crew of high- tech, big-time thieves (a premise reminiscent of the inferior “Heist” and the excellent “Hustle” and “Thief”). Small articles about "Smith" !

Smith From the prolific producer John Wells comes the fast-paced drama SMITH, which tracks a diverse crew of career criminals as they plot and carry out high-stakes heists at prominent locations around the country. Ray Liotta stars as the team's no-nonsense leader, looking for that one elusive big haul before going straight - or at least that's what he tells his wife (Virginia Madsen). He's walking a tightrope between his present life and the new one they hope is on the horizon.

Most buzz-worthy: Ray Liotta heads up a gang of career criminals (Simon Baker, Amy Smart, Franky G and Jonny Lee Miller) in “Smith” (Sept. 19). It’s a much more interesting show than the lame title would have viewers believe.

The new must-see shows this fall !

10. SMITH Tuesdays, 10 p.m., CBS Ray Liotta plays the leader of a team of thieves who is living a double life as a white-collar suburbanite. There are shades of Henry Hill (Liotta's "GoodFellas" character) in his performance. The anxiety of a man who finds himself in circumstances he can no longer control - and that may very well get him killed - jumps off the screen. Simon Baker and Jonny Lee Miller are standouts as members of his team. As Liotta's wife, Virginia Madsen is the portrait of love and support, until we learn that she has clattering skeletons of her own.

Harder to tell good from bad

Ray Liotta is drawn to his character's contrasts. "Hope is the girl of my dreams. I'm not a philanderer. I love my wife and kids. I just also love to steal."

Five Fall Shows to Know !

Smith: Boring title; kickass pilot. Calling it a TV version of Heat doesn't do justice to the surprising twists and adrenaline-pumping action. Simon Baker, 'Smith,' CBS

After filling supporting roles in "The Ring Two" and "The Devil Wears Prada" and starring on CBS' "The Guardian," he supports an ensemble-cast drama as a slow-walking sociopath who kills people merely for touching his surfboard.

"I like the idea: Can you play a character that likes to go surfing and likes the touch of nice fabrics and shoots people and doesn't care about it?" he says. It's a freeing role, "playing a character where you don't have to worry about, 'Well, is the audience going to like him?' "

Stand in for Simon Baker on "Smith"

Pretty cool to have been the stand in for Simon Baker on the set of "SMITH" I really enjoyed the time on the set. Wait till you see the speedboat with the three 225 horsepower engines that were strapped to the back of this small speedboat for the getaway scene. It was a blast to watch them cruising up the river. Although the 27 degree temp was brutal while standing around for 4 hours at a time.

Some of fall's shows promise pretty viewing!

"Smith" (CBS, 9 p.m. Tuesdays): OK, so the central characters in this drama from John Wells of "ER" fame are career criminals who plan and execute large-scale heists. Technically, that falls under the category of cops and robbers — another overdone theme on television. However, the incredible cast — led by Ray Liotta ("Goodfellas") and Virginia Madsen ("Sideways") — puts this one head and shoulders above most of the genre.

Their nuanced portrayals and other fine performances — by Simon Baker, Amy Smart and Jonny Lee Miller —make you care about what happens to these criminals. But don't get the idea they're romanticized. They're also shown for what they are: greedy men and women who kill and terrorize and who, really, deserve to get caught.

Anti-hero dramas?

John Wells of "ER," an executive producer of "Smith," a new CBS drama about a heist crew, was asked how he can justify the fact that the show's lead characters commit murder and other violent acts.

"My hope is that the audience will be interested in seeing characters who [are] dangerous and what happens to them and how the risks that they're taking catch up with them," Wells said, who said there will be "eventual retribution" for the "Smith" characters.

 From Chicago Tribune .

Egg-vertising

Wanna hear something sad? My favorite tidbit from CBS yesterday was their new advertising campaign, dubbed "egg-vertising."

In September, CBS will stamp slogans, series logos and air times on 35 million eggs that will be sold in grocery stores. EggFusion, the company that stamps laser coded expiration dates on eggs, is handling the messages.

"We're egg-cited about this egg-clusive opportunity," crowed the always imaginative George Schweitzer, president of CBS Marketing.

Among the slogans: CBS Mondays, Funny Side Up; "CSI"” Crack the Case on CBS; "The Amazing Race," Scramble to Win on CBS; and "How I Met Your Mother," Find Your Chick on CBS; "Smith," Prosessional Poachers.

 From austin360.com.

Article from austin360.com

John Wells, who created CBS’s new crime drama "Smith," was reminded that his show, about a professional crook and his semi-normal home life, sounds a lot like the recent flops "Heist" and "Thief."

What makes "Smith" different, besides having Ray Liotta as the hero/villain?

"I hope it's better," said Wells, who confessed he has always found law-breakers more interesting than law enforcers.

In Liotta's mind, the professional crook he plays is just like any other hard-working guy — even though he kills a museum security guard in the pilot before heading home for dinner.

"He loves his wife and provides for his kids," Liotta said. "He just has a 'jones' for stealing."

Apparently, he doesn't mind a little collateral damage either.

From austin360.com.

Nice guys finish last?

As we stood around talking about different details in the pilot, Liotta wandered over, fuming about the way the session had gone. I can't quote most of it, but suffice it to say he felt the room was being a little harsh. So I said, "Well, not everybody. I was just telling John and Chris that the scene where Simon kills the surfers is the best thing in the whole pilot."

ASK MATT!

Question: Do you think that CBS' Smith will last the whole season? — Lisa B.

Matt Roush: Hard for me to say. But if you're asking me if it should last the season, I'm still at a loss. The pilot (from John Wells) is extremely well made, introducing us to a glamorous team of criminals plotting an elaborate heist that goes slightly awry, hinting at repercussions and complications to come. My problem with the show is that, unlike morally challenging shows like The Shield and The Sopranos, there's not much humanity or complexity to these characters, who come off like ciphers initially. That could change, and the show could become as suspenseful as its pilot felt shallow. But the big question mark is how dark CBS viewers are willing to go, from NCIS to the edgier The Unit to the ethically bankrupt Smith. Will it be too much?

Fall TV Preview

"Smith" brings Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen together on CBS.

Even the way these series are executed is going to make you crave popcorn. "Smith," created by John Wells, takes cues from "Reservoir Dogs," "Ocean's 11" and "Heat." The pilot clocks in at an hour. It really could be a movie.

Don't forget the significant difference between movies and TV -- movies end after a couple hours. We tend to be done with them once they're over, so what's to bring us back next week?

From Seattle Post Intelligencer .

Advance copy? Ha!

In the new hit comedy "The Devil Wears Prada," fearsome fashionista Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) puts newbie assistant Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) to the ultimate test: scoring a manuscript copy of the new, unpublished Harry Potter book for Miranda's twin girls.

Young Andy manages to pull off the seemingly impossible, thanks to the charms of writer Christian Thompson (Simon Baker), who pulls some strings in publishing. Could it really happen? Dream on, says Kris Moran of Scholastic, which publishes the Potter series domestically.

"No one has ever gotten an advance copy of a (Potter) book," Moran says.

Article from "The Seattle Times"!

The first episode of the new CBS heist drama "Smith" feels like a movie. In fact, it feels like the movie "Ocean's 11," with Ray Liotta in the George Clooney role and Simon Baker as Brad Pitt. Except for the part where Baker shoots a couple of surfers because they dared to touch his board. But never mind that, because the small-screen version is just as entertaining, with lots of action and a killer - sorry - soundtrack.

Created by television and film producer John Wells ("ER," "The West Wing"), "Smith" is a slick, big-budget pilot that runs over an hour and is populated with movie stars, including Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen.

 From The Sun Herald.

"Smith " news updates!

CBS is bringing us "Smith," which doesn't mean anything to the average viewer, so that series' best hope is in putting other names -- Virginia Madsen, Ray Liotta and executive producer John Wells -- front and center so the title becomes secondary. From Seattle Post Intelligencer .

SMASH HIT: Do you own, or know somebody who owns, a building with lots of glass in front? Maybe a little strip mall or something in a business park?

We're gonna give you a phone number. You call it, and if all goes well, in a few weeks a guy will drive into your building with a full-size Hummer in a glorious explosion of violence and destruction. You can thank us later.

After the crash, you get a nice check and an efficient gang of builders will restore your mall to its former beauty.

It's show biz, of course, and the crash scene will be part of a new fall series on CBS, "Smith," about a gang of professional criminals, produced by John Wells ("ER," "The West Wing") and starring Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen.

Crews from the show will be in town in a couple of weeks to shoot some other local scenery, including a beach house just west of the Peninsula (the same house is used as Chili's home in "The O.C.").

If you're interested in sacrificing your building for art, call John Robinson of Long Beach Locations, (562) 951-0306 for more details and to hammer out the Hummer details. This is as far as we take you.

"Smith" is one intense show, playing almost like a mini-movie, and as if to accent that, the drama's pilot is 90 minutes long. Execs say it's as of yet unclear how they'll handle the abnormally long pilot, but it'll either run commercial-free or in an hour-long slot with no commercials.

The delightful Simon Baker !

The whistling psychopath on CBS's upcoming crime drama "Smith" gave a piece of his mind to Melanie McFarland. Simon Baker, who was for four years the least obtrusive lead character perhaps in network history on "The Guardian," thinks that questioning a character's likability is tantamount to shacking up with Jerry Falwell. TV Gal talks about "2006 TCA Party" and "Smith"!

CBS made a football theme out of the evening complete with heart attack food (hamburgers, ribs and pizza) and field goal kicking area. Not exactly a fan of any of that. What I did like, however, was "Smith's" pilot, particularly because it had Simon "Hot, Hot, Hottie McHotterson" Baker in it.

To ensure that the evening had a point, I cornered Baker for a 10 minute conversation, not only because he's lovely to gaze upon, but because he shifted uncomfortably in his chair throughout most of "Smith's" panel, which reporters turned into a long, prickly discussion about likability. Had to ask him about that.

CBS's best bet is the compelling "Smith," which is like a TV version of "Ocean's 11." Preview of "Smith" from  Newsday!

After CBS' heist suspenser "Smith" kicks off with squealing tires and speeding getaway boats, the story jumps back 60 minutes, then three weeks, to show us how the caper comes apart.

But this one isn't just a thriller. "Smith" producer John Wells ("The West Wing," "ER") allots his fine actors (Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen) enough settle-down time to breathe emotional life into their gang's conflicted characters. That's refreshing. It also makes us wonder about a season when the most flesh-and-blood people we see are essentially the bad guys.

Tuesday Night's TV Wars!

Going head-to-head at 10 p.m. are "Boston Legal" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." The newcomer to the hour is CBS' "Smith," starring RAY LIOTTA, VIRGINIA MADSEN and SIMON BAKER.

"'Smith' has the potential to be the breakout hit drama-wise of the entire year, because it looks like a movie," Craig Tomashoff comments. "JOHN WELLS of 'ER' fame has put this one together. It is about thieves. It sounds like it is going to be about those charming thieves who break the law and we all go, 'All right. You are breaking the law, but for good.' In a way 'Smith' follows that long tradition of they're bad, but they are really good. The only difference is they are not quite that good."

From ET Online .

Simon talks about "Sex and Death 101"!

In Land of the Dead, Simon Baker  played Riley, the reluctant leader of a band of human survivors of a worldwide plague that has turned the dead into walking, flesh-eating corpses. But Baker said that the movie worked also as an allegory of the current political situation. "I just love the socio-political sort of [ideas]," he said. "You know, the allegory of his films. It's funny, because so many people—all my highbrow friends—[said], 'God you did a zombie movie? And now you're doing like a sex comedy? Aren't you scared to do these movies?' And I sort of feel that ... I've got plenty of time to settle into the rocking chair and safe, comfy parts. Drink the same beer every day [laughs]. I like the thrill of it. and George was like a trip to me. He's such a cool cat."

Simon wants do "Land of the Dead" sequel !

"The basis [of the movie] is kind of a bit real, but then it has a sci-fi element to it, and then it's got ... a little broad ... fantasy aspect to it, and [it] goes all over the place," Simon Baker said. "But it has to merge in a real place. ... So [Dan] gave me all these references and all these DVDs, and on the backs he put these cards, ... what the references were, why he wanted to look at this, the tone of that or the performance in the third act: 'This character in the third act reminds me of Blank, because he's a blank. He's a blank slate.' And the whole idea here is that the character is kind of blank. It's like he's sort of empty without this list, this desire, this thing. It cleans him right out, in a sense. He's not rooted into who he really is."Says Simon.

Director talks about Sex and Death101 !

Daniel Waters, writer and director of the upcoming surreal black comedy Sex and Death 101, told us that he made the film in part because there aren't enough good American movies about sex anymore."I just find that there are so few movies about sex in general," Waters said in an interview on the film's set at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles on June 15. "It seems like there's either the pretentious, boring, Eyes Wide Shut kind of thing, or the dorky ... movies written by people who don't really know what sex is, like American Pie or something like that. ... But the thing is if you go back to the '70s, you had movies like Shampoo, Diary of a Mad Housewife, ... they were great movies, and they ... weren't, like, Laemmle Sunset Five [art house] movies, either."

More description about "Smith"

Further up the amorality scale is “Smith” on CBS, one of two new shows revolving around bandits. It might be the best-looking pilot I saw: an expensively made, well-paced drama about a half-dozen professional thieves planning a big heist.

To say these are deeply flawed people is an understatement. Borderline psychotic, or worse, is probably closer. In one scene, a thief played by former “Guardian” star Simon Baker coolly shoots two men dead — while whistling.

The most empathetic character on “Smith” is the wife of one of the robbers, played by Virginia Madsen, and her emotional hook is that she’s in a loveless marriage with a husband she suspects is cheating on her.

From  Kansas City Star .

Plot and description about "Smith"

The other half is the surprise that for the most part Bobby and his crew are portrayed as genuinely bad people. Hell, Baker's Jeff and Smart's Annie are both essentially sociopaths. Baker alone has two major "are they seriously having his character do this" moments, while an early misstep by Smart's character is explained by the last possible scenario you'd think of. After NBC's "Heist" and FX's "Thief," we finally have "the" show about thieves.

"It is a character-driven piece about relationships that are drawn through the transplant community," Hollander said last week. "It's primarily an intense look at relationships both inside the transplant community and outside, looking at the recipients and donor families."

Heading back to Hollywood!

No sooner had heart-throb Simon Baker and his wife Rebecca Rigg come home to Sydney after a decade in America than, PS discovers, they and their three children are heading back to Hollywood.

A former Sanctuary Cove pool boy, Baker has already returned to the US to start shooting a new television series called Smith, being made by the team behind the hugely successful ER series for Warner Bros.

Smith deals with the inner workings of a team of criminals, with Baker playing a larrikin, laid-back surfer dude by day, and a shrewd crook by night. He co-stars in the new series with Ray Liotta.

John Wells talks about "Smith"!

Veteran executive producer John Wells was beaming at the CBS upfront after-party at Central Park's Tavern on the Green Wednesday. The prolific producer behind the drama hits "ER" and "The West Wing," Mr. Wells has been through the upfront gauntlet before.

"This is the time period we were hoping for," Mr. Wells said of "Smith's" Tuesday 10 p.m. (ET) slot. "There's two things you look for: lead in and promotion. "Smith" has both going for it, Mr. Wells noted.

A good attitude to have in a tough business like developing TV shows. It also explains why Mr. Wells was so happy with "Smith."

Strory about Sex and Death 101!

Roderick Blank: 28-38. A top executive for an upscale fast food chain, Roderick Blank is a man way too content with his perfectly planned existence. A week before his wedding to a banal fiancee, however, Roderick is e-mailed a list of every woman he's ever had sex with...and, mysteriously, every woman he EVER WILL have sex with. A good-hearted rogue of wicked intelligence and subversive wit, Roderick casts away his betrothed and launches into an ultimate male fantasy -101 women without the "will-she-or-won't-she" factor! Like a modern day King Midas, Roderick's exhiliration turns into exhaustion and finally, full-blown madness. Roderick meets the love of his life - but alas, this angel is not on the List. He later meets a twisted maneater who calls herself Death Nell - this dark fairy IS on the List. When it comes to his soul, the List is the gift that keeps on taking. Only by embracing his mortality and giving up his need for control does Roderick outwit the List and come to a state of enlightenment. Lead.

Shirt off!

Is this going to be a himbo-dacious season or what?

At CBS, the new series are sooooooo watchable. In "Smith," we've got series virgin Ray Liotta and prodigal "Guardian" alumnus Simon Baker, who has never looked happier or better. The Insider thanked CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler, who said of Mr. Baker: "Two words: Shirt off," a promise the clips made good on. Mr. Baker spent a lot of time on the beach.

Simon on NY Times!!

The Devil Wears Prada" (June 30) is a fashion-savvy chick-lit comedy based on the 2001 romanic clef by Lauren Weisberger. The Australian actor Simon Baker, below, plays Christian Harper, a staff writer for New York magazine and the sort of "real" journalist that Andrea, who was editor of her college newspaper, aspires to be. Still, men are incidental in this movie. Which makes Mr. Baker's ability to steal almost every scene he is in all the more impressive.

Behind the scenes on 'Smith'!

Simon Baker, who starred for three years in the Pittsburgh-set legal drama "The Guardian," said it was "weird" to be back in Pittsburgh, staying in the same hotel and working with the same local crew as he did during the "Guardian" days.

In "Smith," Baker plays one of the thieves in a gang led by Ray Liotta. In the pilot, the crew steals art from the fictitious Tanner Museum in Pittsburgh. Mellon Institute in Oakland played the Tanner in scenes shot on Fifth Avenue Sunday. Never have more people clogged that sidewalk than when the production hired dozens of extras to walk along it take after take.

Simthwatch!

The Futon Critic has slightly updated the DevWatch for "Smith" to include a little more character information. Simon's character is apparently named "Jeff".

IMDB has it flagged as "completed". But there's no simon's name on it. If Futon Critic's information is correct, that means the show's guaranteed for at least a few episodes in the fall.

Aussies rate US success!

AMERICAN TV executives have their fingers crossed that some of Australia's best known actors, including Rachel Griffiths and Simon Baker, will lead their networks to ratings gold.

"Smith" is a John Wells project. Wells, a 1979 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, has a proven track record -- executive producer and co-writer of "ER" and "The West Wing."

And the cast is packed with well-known talent -- Ray Liotta ("Goodfellas"), Virginia Madsen ("Sideways"), Simon Baker, Amy Smart and Franky G.

Liotta's presence should be a thumbs-up sign for a crime show. He's getting to be a regular in Pittsburgh, having completed filming "Chasing 3000" here in October. Baker worked on the Pittsburgh-set series "The Guardian."

Simon is a gem. And we had a great time working together. But he was in the thick of it. I think he'd just had a baby, and being the leading man in series TV means you rarely see your family. Trofest postponed!

Simon is one of the celebrity judges on Tropfest short film festival. The judges had just 15 films from which to select a winner. Driving rain has forced organisers to cut short the annual Tropfest, which had been underway in a major Sydney park. Judges - including Australian acting stars Toni Collette and Simon Baker - became drenched in the teeming rain and have had to take shelter in tents in The Domain. Thousands of people were attending the Tropfest short film festival, which has now been postponed. Earlier tonight, as rain clouds threatened the event, orgainsers had said the festival would go ahead "rain, hail or shine".

TV Q and A from Press-Enterprise!

Q: I see Tom Cavanagh has returned to TV with a new series. Is there a chance that Simon Baker may return as well? He has failed to make a mark on the big screen with two so-so movies. Is "The Guardian" going into syndication? -- J.W., Mountain View

A: Don't look for Baker, who starred in CBS' "The Guardian," to return to the small screen anytime soon. His film career is going pretty well. He's currently in the romantic comedy "Something New" and has wrapped work on his next movie, "The Devil Wears Prada," starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. "The Guardian" reruns may be syndicated at some time, or released on DVD, but no deals have been announced at this time. You probably know by now that Cavanagh's (Ed) return to the tube didn't last long. His new series, "Love Monkey," quickly got the boot.

New interview of Simon Baker from "Voice of America!

Australian actor Simon Baker adopts an American accent to co-star as Brian; but Baker says he also had to learn about contemporary American racial attitudes to understand the character's plight.

"In the beginning it did limit me in a sense because I was afraid of offending people," he says. "I didn't know the politically correct terms: can I refer to myself as 'white' or do I have to say 'Caucasian?' Can I say that you're 'black?' What are the rules here? I don't want to make mistakes and, at the same time, I want the character to be true to a love story. When people first meet each other, it's a process no matter what race, color, gender ... whatever. It's about discovering each other."

Simon interview in 365gay.com!

"We just moved to Australia," Simon begins to explain. "All of my kids were born here in Los Angeles. And they loved it and I loved it but I want them to get a sense of something new, not just what I saw as a kid growing up but something educational. The littlest one (his youngest son), loved T-Ball but now the three of them, (his kids), are loving cricket. Who would have ever guessed? Kids adapt so easily to new environments and I think giving them the opportunity to see two different worlds, and the United States and Australia really are two different worlds, will make them all the better. They can certainly choose where they want to plant their roots when they are grown up, but until then, Australia is home."

Actor SIMON BAKER's drinking habit have escalated, since he moved back to his native Australia.

THE RING TWO star has been living in the US for over 10 years and had to re-adjust his lifestyle upon returning to his heavy-drinking homeland.

Baker explains, "I don't necessarily drink more, I just drink more often there. It's great."

He admits his alcohol tolerance is much lower and he's had to get back into the routine since moving home.

He adds, "It's like training - you just get in better shape - you just drink (all the time)."

This month sees the release of Something New, starring hot Australian actor Simon Baker, his pecs Sanaa Lathan. We'd almost forgive Simon for Starring in trash like Land of the Dead and The Ring 2. but he's still got his shirt on this photo. so we can't quite do that.---Robbie Daw.
