After serving prison time for assault, boxer Tim Dohanic wants help to regain custody of his seven-year-old son, Oscar. And when he wants some advice on his career, Nick refers him to his dad. Ignoring her mom's pleas, Lulu returns to work following her near fatal car accident. But when Alvin won't initiate a lawsuit on behalf of a fourteen-year-old high school cheerleader who was caught having oral sex on a school bus, Lulu turns to Jake. Meanwhile, after being subpoenaed in the bribery case of a former employee, Caroline Novack keeps it a secret from her daughter as she asks Nick to help. And when pressed for the truth, she admits that the money was meant to help the indicted man to buy a condo in order to carry on their extramarital affair.


After asking for Nick's advice on buying a new car, Lulu presses with Ashley Webber's case, hoping to find grounds to sue. Yet, when Jake wants to let a newspaper reporter break the story, Lulu refuses to pressure the teenager into exposing herself to the heightened media scrutiny. Amid concerns that too many fights could risk a career-ending injury, Tim and Nick are successful in gaining custody of Oscar. Meanwhile, only after her stepfather arrives in Pittsburgh does Lulu learn of Caroline's legal troubles. But after telling Lulu that she hasn't mentioned her adulterous affair, Caroline realizes that she will now have to tell her husband the truth.


Though Lulu gets the bus company to settle Ashley's negligence claim, when she discovers that Jake is also suing on behalf of the boy involved for much more money, she persuades him to donate a larger portion of his fee to Legal Services. After Tim insists on following up one victory in the ring with another tough fight, Burton, Nick and Lulu watch as he is pummeled. And when the damage threatens to end his ring comeback, Tim asks Nick to have Oscar returned to his grandparents. Finally, as Lulu presses her mom to spend some time with her husband now that she's told him the truth about her affair, she ignores Nick's advice and buys a sporty convertible for herself.
