A teenaged client is severely wounded when he intervenes to help save Nick s life.
After persuading a judge that Doug DeBord s violent, brain injury-induced outbursts make it unsafe
for his children to be with him, Nick successfully argues that Jesse Caputo be allowed to stay in his group home despite some
disciplinary problems. Though Nick has little interest in doing anything more, after representing Legal Services at his high
school graduation and then accompanying him to visit his estranged mother, he reluctantly offers Jesse a job. Upon learning
of the fire that s left Mary Gressler and her granddaughter Shannon homeless, Burton invites them to stay with him while he
pursues their insurance claim. And though the offer makes her uneasy, Burton s positive influence on Shannon prompts Mary
to accept.
When Jesse arrives at work anxious to get started, Nick reluctantly invites him to a meeting at Legal
Services. But when a pistol wielding Doug DeBord comes gunning for Nick, it s Jesse who gets shot in the face when he tries
to stop him. Although Lulu persuades DeBord to surrender the weapon by claiming to be his new lawyer, the lie jeopardizes
her standing in the legal community after an advocacy group complains, and she reluctantly accepts Nick s offer to represent
her at the disciplinary hearing. Meanwhile, as he wrestles with his own feelings for Mary, Burton tries making her and Shannon
feel more welcome.
In need of something to stimulate Jesse s memory, Nick turns to the young man s mother, who
admits that the story about his father being a former professional football player was a fabrication. And after being appointed
Jesse s medical guardian leads him to seek the aid of the same brain injury advocate group that represented DeBord, Nick s
spirited and impassioned defense helps Lulu keep her license to practice law. Finally, though Burton wants them to stay even
after the insurance company pays for the damage to her home, Mary insists that she and Shannon try to make it on their own.
