As Nick works to keep ten-year-old Kyle Plunkett in a county shelter pending a decision on his father s custody petition, Alvin is asked to represent an elderly widower who has built a large, and very disruptive, aviary in his backyard. And as Alvin looks to compromise, he finds that Burton s handling some of the City s legal work means they are going to be squaring off over the matter in court. However, while Burton s arrangement means steady work for the firm, Nick and Jake worry that it has created a conflict with a prospective high paying client. Meanwhile, as she prepares to defend former child actor Gavin Putinski against a protection order filed by his parents, Lulu worries that she s being stalked. And upon turning to police officer Kim McPherson for help, she finds her at home with Nick.


As Lulu suspects her stalker could be either Putinski or ex-convict Albert Gregg, Gavin claims that his parent s action against him is their response to having learned he s gay. After Burton misses an important meeting that costs Nick and Jake their client, Sharon Plunkett insists that her ex-husband would beat their son if given the chance. But when Kyle is unable to recall ever being hit by his dad, Nick suspects that Sharon is really the violent one especially after learning that she s kidnapped her son. In court, Burton convinces the judge to order Martin Copeland to dismantle the birdhouses he built for his late wife after an illness left her housebound.


And as Nick takes over the work on Albert Gregg s divorce, Lulu s legal strategy backfires when Gavin s parents turn around and accuse him of trespassing in the house they bought with the money he earned. Despite Burton s efforts to dissuade him, Martin begins rebuilding the aviary. And as Burton offers Nick and Jake the legal work on a large city bond issue to make up for costing them a lucrative client, he helps land Martin a job at the city s aviary. Finally, with Sharon s arrest, Nick convinces the judge to allow Kyle to be slowly integrated back into his dad s life. And after obtaining a court order to keep Albert away from Lulu, Nick fails to show up for a big date with Kim.
