1894	Japan defeated China and gained control on Korea and Taiwan.
late 19th century	Modernisation of Japan
1904	Japan defeated Russia and gained control of Russia's port in China and some of Russia's share of Manchuria.
WWI	Japan joined the Allies
1930's	The Great Depression Japan was greatly affected.
1931	Japan invaded and conquered Manchuria. conquering of Manchuria alarmed Britain, resulting in speeding up of construction of Naval Base in Singapore.
1932	Adolf Hitler's party became the largest party in Germany.
late 1930's	Germany's armed forces have been strengthened.
1937	Japan attacked other parts of China. effect on Singapore: Boycotting of Japanese goods, contributions to help China, anti-Japanese demonstrations were organised.
1938	Austria became part of Germany to avoid war with Germany. Germany gained control of North-western Czechoslovakia.
1938	Britain fought Germany in Europe Dry dock in Singapore had been completed, but only a small fleet of warships was available in Singapore.
1939	By this time, Germany and Italy were known as the Axis Powers. Britain, France, and other countries formed the Allies.
1939	Germany conquered the whole of Czechoslovakia. Hitler made an agreement not to fight with Soviet Union not to fight each other. After Germany gained control of Poland, they would divide Poland between them. Britain and France declared war on Germany, because Hitler refused to stop his invasion of Poland. Germany coquered Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium and France.
1940	Britain was the only Allied country left.
1940	Japan became the Pacific Axis partner.
1941	Germany attacked Soviet Union, breaking the promise that they made.
	Italy attacked Greece and Egypt.
	America joined in the war against the Axis (it joined the Allies)
Japanese invaded Malaya Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Japan invaded Dutch East Indies and British Burma.
1942	Germany conquered part of Soviet Union.
1942	Japan conquered Malay Peninsula. British destroyed the Naval Base in Singapore. The Japanese gained control of Singapore. Japan conquered Philippines, an American colony. Japan was trying to conquer New Guinea. Americans broke the Japanese code for secret radio messages, thus foreseeing a Japanese attack. They destroyed many Japanese crafts and warships. This greatly weakened Japan.
1943	British drove German out of Egypt. The Allied force of British and American troops forced Germany to surrender. Soviet Union fought back and drove the Germans out.
1944	Italy fell to the Allies.
	Americans regained control of Phillipines.
	British Allied troops reconquered France.
1945	Allied forces trapped the German forces and Germany surrendered.
	America captured the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa of Japan. America used two atomic bombs on Japan-- One in Hiroshima and the other in Nagasaki, forcing the Japanese to surrender. Singapore returned to the British.
