The Mussel Inn was established in 1992 and originally stocked around
30 different bottled beers from boutique breweries throughout New Zealand,
with Macs and Pink Elephant beers on tap. We also
have a selection of Nelson area wines and a menu which features local produce,
especially seafood. Fresh steamed mussels are very popular. We built our
brewery in 1995 and it now supplies all of our tap beer requirements. A
reduced range of bottled beers is still available.
Golden Goose Lager - full bodied with a good hop bitterness
4% alc/vol.
Dark Horse Stout - more of a porter than a stout - locals
favourite 4% alc/vol.
Strong Ox - strong dark beer - similar to the Horse but
sweeter - the brewers favorite! 6% alc/vol.
Captain Cooker - Manuka beer - A rich brown ale, lightly
hopped and with addtion of manuka tips to give a most pleasent herbal finish.
A favorite with most people who like something different. Based partly
on captain Cooks original recipe
The Brewery is located adjacent to The Mussel Inn cafe/bar in a
small purpose built building working largely on a gravity system. maximum
capacity is 2 x 300 litre brews per week. All the brewing is done by Andy
and Jane Dixon, the proprietors of The Mussel Inn. The beers are unfiltered,
unpasturised and naturally conditioned, using only local hops (and our
own hops for one or two special brews a year) New Zealand Malts (some imported
coloured malts) and a bottom cropping lager yeast. We have an excellent
water supply from a small stream in the bush covered hills behind The Mussel
Inn. Our beers are full bodied and tasty but at the same time appeal to
most people.
The Mussel Inn is open from 11am to late 7 days a week from Labour
weekend (last Monday in October) to Easter. Anyone interested in real beer
is most welcome to tour the brewery.
