Dear Editor:

Being a doctor and a regular reader of your newspaper, your photo caption on unnecessary circumcision entitled “Rites of summer” dated last April 30, 2004 had greatly caught my attention because it has a big relevance on our ongoing campaign headed by our Chairman in Department of Surgery Ospital Ng Maynila. For the record, our campaign against circumcision already started last two years ago with the idea of violating human rights because the practice does not contribute to the best interest of the child, prejudiced child’s health being a part of traditional rites and does not provide informed consent.

In view of the medical aspect, we as doctors are the official circumcisers who accomplish this practice for several years now. However, with the thorough research, findings showed that it has no medical benefit at all as agreed by medical experts.

As I reviewed the picture, I saw a victim, a helpless young male who is bound to perform once in his life the annual summer operation causing him so much pain together with over a hundred boys being circumcised. Out of sympathy, I firmly recommend the pursuance of “Anti-Tule Campaign” through us and your means. This way, we can help our boys enjoy their human rights.
