Journal Study

A Course Study for Surgical Residents

Why learn how to study journal articles?

Journal articles are sources of information where surgical residents and surgeon-graduates can seek answers to questions in management of their patients.

Surgical residents and surgeon graduates should know how to:

  1. Look for the necessary information in journal articles.
  2. Use the data they saw in journal articles

There are other uses of journal articles that the surgical residents and surgeon-graduates can tap such as aid in making their research papers and reading materials for their continuing surgical education.

Journal study is one of the teaching-learning activities prescribed in an accredited general surgery residency program.

General Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course study, the surgical resident should be able to acquire the requisite knowledge, skills, and habit in utilizing journal articles in:

  1. solving problems in patient management
  2. making research papers
  3. continuing surgical education (with emphasis on evidence-based clinical practice guidelines of the Philippine College of Surgeons)

Specific Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course study, the surgical resident must be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of learning how to study journal articles.
  2. Given a clinical question, demonstrate skills in using electronic database search engines such Medline and Herdin in looking for journal articles (abstracts and full papers).
  3. Given a question on rational clinical examination for a particular disorder, demonstrate skills in appraising at least three (3) full journal articles in answering the question.
  4. Given a question on cost-effective paraclinical diagnostic procedure for a particular disorder, demonstrate skills in appraising at least three (3) full journal articles in answering the question.
  5. Given a question on cost-effective treatment (comparing different surgical treatment procedures) for a particular disorder, demonstrate skills in appraising at least three (3) full journal articles in answering the question.
  6. Given a question on cost-effective treatment (comparing different treatment modalities) for a particular disorder, demonstrate skills in appraising at least three (3) full journal articles in answering the question.
  7. Given a research question, demonstrate skills in making a review of literature to come out with a concise summary.
  8. Given a research paper, demonstrate skills in critiquing using the “Instructions to Authors” of the Philippine Journal of Surgical Specialties as a guide.
  9. Describe the procedures being adopted by the Philippine College of Surgeons in formulating evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
  10. Study all the evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (EBCPGs) of the Philippine College of Surgeons and pass written tests on these guidelines.
    1. EBCPG on seeking referral for preoperative cardiac evaluation for elective noncardiac surgery (Philipp J Surg Spec 1999; 43(4): 172-223.)
    2. EBCPG on breast cancers
