DUNES HIGHWAY MEETING TODAY FEDERAL AID

Gary, Jan. 20.--The good roads meeting held here today was a whopper. Michigan City sent 40 representative business men from the Chamber of Commerce, and upon suggestion of Walter K. Greenebaum, secretary of the Michigan City delegation, a permanent good roads association was formed by the adoption of the name "Indiana Dunes Highway Association." Its organization was perfected by the election of these officers:
President--A. S. Hess, Gary.
Vice President--W. E. Jewell, Indiana Harbor.
Vice President--George B. Johnson, Michigan City.
Secretary--Walter K. Greenebaum, Michigan City.
Treasurer--Z. T. Campbell, East Chicago.
Mayor Hodges of Gary, welcomed the visiting delegations at the Chamber of Commerce. He complimented Michigan City upon its splendid delegation and the enthusiasm shown. He predicted success for a movement which such live wires were behind.
Attorney T. C. Mullen of Michigan City, recently returned from the army, spoke upon the good roads movement.
E. L. Lopdell, president of the Sheridan Road Improvement association of Chicago, told of the achievements of that organization, which came into being in 1912. This organization put thru the new Sheridan road to the state line, and this is now being extended to Milwaukee. Ultimately, he said, the road will be built thru to St. Ignace.
The Dunes highway, which is to be the shortest route between Chicago and Detroit, via Gary and Michigan City, is to be built with the aid of federal money. The government has appropriated $75,000,000 to be apportioned among various states for road improvements.
A local committee of five will be named in each community thru which the road is to pass. Each committee will elect its own chairman and these various chairmen will form the executive committee of the association.
The association will have a committee at Indianapolis to study and look after the highways bill introduced in the Indiana legislature today.

REPORT TODAY HIGHWAY PLANS
President Hess Predicts Early Work on Dunes Road to Gary Saturday, June 7.
Early construction work on the Dunes Highway between Michigan City and Gary, skirting the famous Indiana sand dunes, was predicted today by President A. S. Hess of the Indiana Dunes Highway association, at this afternoon's meeting in Gary to receive the report of the engineers and to make final plans for the early prosecution of the work. The new highway will be 23 miles in length and will run almost in a straight line from this city to Gary. It will cost about $600,000 and will be one of the most important highways in this section of the country.
The highway is to be built by federal, state, and county aid, under provisions of federal and state highway laws.

WORK ON ROADS OF INDIANA TO BEGIN AT ONCE Work on the construction of Indiana roads will begin at once, according to H. K. Bishop, engineer of the Indiana state highway commission. The first roads to be improved will be the national road in Marion county west of Indianapolis and a stretch of road extending from South Bend to the Michigan state line.
The construction this summer will follow the main market highways, which includes the proposed Lincoln highway from the state line in Lake county through Gary to South Bend. This road will skirt the southern end of the proposed national dunes park.1

PORTER COUNTY WILL GET MUCH CEMENT ROAD Though not officially announced information coming from reliable sources is to the effect that Porter county will probably get more cement road than any other county in the state, through the action of the state highway commission. All the Lincoln highway in this county will be cemented; the Yellowstone trail from Valpo on east will also be cemented, and the road from Chicago to Michigan City2 will receive a like treatment. The Chicago and Indianapolis cement road strikes the county about two miles south of Hebron, giving Porter county four roads to be cemented. Through these roads Valparaiso will be connected with all of the county seat towns. The completion of the 3,200 miles of cement roadway in the state will take seven years.
1At this time, the routes of the Lincoln & Dunes highways were not yet set in stone, nor were the boundaries of the proposed Sand Dunes National Park. Even so, the writer was confusing the two different highways.
The Indiana Dunes are what gave the Dunes Highway its name. It was to be built to provide a convenient way for the multitudes to drive to the (only partially realized) Sand Dunes National Park. 2The Dunes Highway.
