Abstract
In this paper the problem of Jewish primary school in the Russian Empire at the end of
the XIX-th and the beginning of the XX-th centuries is considered.
In spite of repression of the national school taught in the nature language and the
propagation of the Russian school by Russian teachers and Russian books, the Jewish school
in the Donbass region developed and gave knowledge (may be even elementary) in the nature
language and elements of religion to its pupils. Besides, it is necessary to note that the
organization level of teaching quality and teachers skill in Jewish schools were not worse
than in Russian ones but, due to several factors, they essentially outstripped the Holy
Synod's schools, which were ideal for the ruling regime at that time.
