Sleepless in Fulham: Rambling and gambling by David Young

Something is wrong here.

Staff working at a jail ... have been advised against wearing St George's Cross tie-pins. A report into Wakefield Prison said the English national flag could be "misinterpreted" as a racist symbol.

I'm not a massive fan of the St George Cross, as I was born in Scotland (as were my mother and sister) and my Dad was born in Wales. However even I can see that this is utterly ridiculous. Our flags are not racist symbols and should be displayed with pride. A person who continually apologises for himself is never respected. The same goes for nations.

Hello David,

I've read the aforementioned article above and can find no reference to the pin badge being misinterpreted as a racist symbol, it simply states that the flag could be misinterpreted.

The conclusion I draw: - I am assuming prison officers are required to wear a uniform, a pin badge of the Union Jack is no more part of that uniform than say a Homer Simpson pin badge which in turn could also be misinterpreted.
Surely if you wear a uniform then accessories are not appropriate?

People in our current framework of society who have authority should be seen as independent and unbiased hence any allegiances should be left at the door when working.

Best Regards,

Nice to see the subconscious working well Alex......

one could note your discussion of racist then incorrectly mentioning the Union Flag rather than the Gt Georges Cross and one could be forgiven to think that years of self-loathing liberalism has worked successfully on you.....................
