State Convention Plans Finalized
Malcolm Hawkins works out convention floor plan with John Kay at planning meeting.
On
April 6, the 2002 Gideons State Convention planning committee, chaired by John
and Nadine Kay, met for the fifth and final time, again at the North Raleigh
Church of the Nazarene. The convention is right around the corner—May 2-5,
right here in Raleigh at the North Raleigh Hilton.
Doug
Schmidt reported that about 50 church services had been obtained
area-wide. Jim Loehman reported that a total of 441 registrations
had been received to date. Here was the local count:

Camp Meeting April 16:
Camp Elections
Our next camp dinner meeting will be
held at Embassy Suites, 4700 Creedmoor Road, at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 16.
Don’t miss this time of F. I. T. (Fellowship, Inspiration and Training).
Several new members will officially be presented their credentials. The
Auxiliary “Special Feature” will be a slide presentation on the “Responsibility
of Officers.” The annual camp elections will also be held. Up for election in both the Gideons and Auxiliary are
the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Chaplain.
Ever thought about holding an office? Let God answer how much time and effort you put in, because none of
us "really have the time." Pray that the Lord will call the
right men and women to the right
offices.
If you made a commitment to be at our
last meeting but couldn’t attend we were still charged for the meal. Please
consider offering your meal cost ($15 per person) to the camp fund c/o Gideons
International, PO Box 33635, Raleigh, NC 27636.
Welcome to
our Seven New Members
As
a result of our One-on-One meeting in February, our camp now has seven new
members: three Gideons and four Auxiliary. They are (in alphabetical order):
Larry and Nancy Davenport, Robert and Pat Grandinetti, Liz Merrill, Karen Rabb, and Fred Tyner.
All of them have received their credentials in the mail, but it is hoped that most of them will also be received formally into the Gideons during the April camp meeting. Dot Rawley has already asked Liz and Karen to help distribute New Testaments at dental and medical offices soon. They are looking forward to it.
Meet Larry
and Nancy Davenport
Larry
Davenport is Director of the National Access Customer Center at Verizon
Telecommunications in RTP. He and Nancy have lived in Raleigh this time for two
years.
The first time was 1992-1996, after which they moved to World
Headquarters in Dallas, Texas.
Larry is originally from Greenville, S.C. and
Nancy is from St. Louis, Missouri. They have one son, Matthew, who is an
assistant district attorney in Greenville, N.C. (Pitt County). Years ago, Larry
himself was a police officer in Cheraw, S.C.! Nancy is a school teacher by
degree and has taught in both Christian and public schools.
They
are members of Bayleaf Baptist Church where Nancy is involved in Precepts Bible
studies. Larry is in good company—he attends the Onward Sunday Class along with
3 or 4 other Gideons from our camp. One of them is Lee Warner, who got him
interested in joining the Gideons. But the seed was planted in Keller, Texas,
where Larry’s Sunday School Director—also a Gideon—first talked to him about
it.
Larry
and Nancy began attending our Saturday
Morning prayer meetings right after the One-on-One meeting—even before they
were official members! Larry has already participated in his first hotel Bible
distribution on March 24 at the Marriott Crabtree Hotel and looks forward to where the
Lord leads him in this ministry. Welcome, Larry and Nancy!
Meet Bob
and Pat Grandinetti
Bob
Grandinetti represents electronic component companies as a manufacturer’s
representative with a local company. Pat is an office assistant at Best Roofing
Company.
After 17 years in Atlanta, they moved here only last year. Bob was the
“advance party,” arriving in February
2001; Pat took care of things in Atlanta and followed in May.
Bob is
originally from Harrisburg, Pa., and Pat is from Plant City, Florida. Their
daughter, Rebecca Roark, still lives in Atlanta and has presented them with two
grandchildren (one on the way). Their two sons are both in the US Army. Robert
Grandinetti III is a First Lieutenant and James (their youngest son) recently
enlisted as a PFC.
The
Grandinettis are members of Friendship Baptist Church. Both he and Nancy are
greeters in the church and Pat is also involved with the nursery. Bob is
involved in the church prison ministry and visits prisoners at Rock Quarry Road
on Fridays. He also plays the timpani drum in the church orchestra. (In college
he majored in trombone and minored in piano, even though he had a scholarship
in percussion.)
Bob
has known about the Gideons for years, but it wasn’t until he began attending
Friendship that he first met some of them, including George Kissinger, who
asked him to join. Bob says, “I just want to do some more work for the Lord. We
love the Lord and we feel like we have to be about our Father’s business.”
Meet Liz
Merrill
Liz
Merrill’s husband Cliff joined the Gideons in October 2000 and now, 16 months
later, Liz has joined the Auxiliary. Welcome, Liz! A native of Raleigh, Liz is
self-employed as a manufacturer’s
representative for two furniture lines and a custom carpet line. Her and Cliff
have two grown children: son Kelin, 29; and daughter Heather, 32. She is a
member of Asbury United Methodist Church and its Care Core Committee which
provides food for member families in need. She is a prayer chain leader and also volunteers for
Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Liz
became interested in the Auxiliary through Cliff and his interest and
participation in the Gideons. She says, “I wanted to be supportive and a part
of that.” Almost before the ink dried on her application, she showed up at Wake
County Jail on Sunday night, March 24, to take part in the Auxiliary jail
ministry. Nadine Kay and Dot Rawley were overjoyed that she came.
Liz said, “I
wasn’t intimidated. I was thrilled to go and I intend to keep going. Hopefully,
I’ll get a little more comfortable as my feet get wet. I couldn’t believe the
number of women that wanted a New Testament. I thought we were going to have to
coax them, but I was surprised that they came forward for prayer the way they
did. Several of them committed their lives to Christ and others rededicated
their lives.”
Something
extraordinary about Liz is that she facilitates a support group at Rex Cancer
Center for ladies with ovarian cancer, something near and dear to her heart.
She says, “This has been a real ministry of mine for the last six years.”
Meet Karen Rabb
Karen Rabb worked outside the home until December and is now in between jobs. She and husband Charlie have lived in Raleigh 21 years.
Before that, they lived in Norfolk, Virginia, but Karen was born and raised in High Point, N.C., where she
still has family.
Karen and Charlie both went to USM (University of Southern Mississippi) but they never met until much later when Charlie came to North Carolina to work at High Point College and met her in an alumni meeting!
They have three children: Amy (the only married one), 26;
Alex, 25; and Mitch, 22. Karen and Charlie recently moved their church
membership to Bayleaf Baptist Church where they attend Sunday School and a
Bible Study.
About
a year ago, they had lunch with Frank and Dot Rawley, at which time Dot brought
up the subject of the Auxiliary. At the time, Karen said she didn’t have the
time because of her job. But now, since she left work, everything kind of fell
into place and the time seemed right to join. Karen says, “There is nothing
special about me. I’m just a plain, ordinary person.” But Karen has met all the
spiritual qualifications for membership in the Auxiliary and is now a bona fide
member. There really is something special about that!
Meet Fred and
Betty Tyner
Over
the years, Fred Tyner has become so used to finding a Gideon Bible in his hotel
room when he travels, that he no longer packs one in his suitcase. He first
became interested in joining the Gideons through Malcolm Hawkins, a fellow
church member at Forest Hills Baptist Church and
our Camp Chaplain. Over the
years, Malcolm had gently asked Fred to check out the Gideons and when he
finally did at the recent One-on-One meeting, he said, it “seemed good.” He
says he’s glad to be in the Gideons, thinks it’s a worthy ministry and likes
what he has seen so far.
Fred
is self-employed as a consulting civil engineer and deals with forensic
engineering. He and another engineer comprise the Tyner Engineering Company in
Raleigh. His wife Betty is the chief administrative person. Originally from
Robeson County, the Tyners moved to Raleigh for the last time in 1969. They
have two daughters: Beth Jones (the oldest), who lives in Buies Creek and is
mother to the Tyners’ two grandchildren; and Leslie Johnson, who lives in Rural
Hall, N.C.
Fred
is a deacon at Forest Hills and substitutes as a men’s class Sunday School
teacher. Fred says he may not be able to attend Saturday morning prayer
meetings because is involved in BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) meetings at that same
time, but he wants to serve in areas that he can. He has already participated
in our March 24 hotel distribution. Betty is not a member yet, but who knows? Maybe a few gentle nudges from now, she will join just as Fred did!
Raleigh Bible Blitz—March 24
On Sunday afternoon,
March 24, sixteen Gideons from our camp joined a Bible Blitz organized by
“General” John Kay. They rallied at the hotel lobbies of three of our larger
hotels, met the hotel staff, prayed, and then checked each and every room they
could possibly check. As they went about the Lord’s business, they prayed to
dedicate or rededicate the "silent missionary" in each room to the
Lord so He would draw people to put
their faith in Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord for such willing workers!

Other distributions: John Kay delivered 25 more Bibles to the Holiday Inn on Easter Sunday after an urgent call from them saying they needed Bibles immediately.
Sam Spilman left 25 Bibles with new covers for Frank Rawley
to take to the jail. Dot Rawley distributed 36 Spanish/English New Testaments
and Hospital New Testaments at the Raleigh Rehabilitation and Healthcare
Center.
Bill Swart on Fire
Bill Swart has been distributing Service Testaments at fire stations
and EMT stations. He visited fire stations 6, 9, 15, Six Forks Volunteer and Bayleaf Volunteer. He also visited the EMT station near Effie Green School on Six Forks Road. So far he has given out a total of 37 Service Testaments. Bill says he witnessed at each station and was able to point out the plan of salvation. At one station, he says, the captain jumped right in and began telling his mates how important the Bible was. Bill says, "He got in more words than I did!"
Recently, Bill bought 100 PWTs and began distributing them himself to members of his Sunday School class at Providence Baptist Church. They had been learning about the importance of personal evangelism and Bill wanted to show them how we Gideons do it. At the church's men's breakfast last Tuesday, April 2, he gave a Gideon talk and passed out 56 testaments. The response was very positive. Bill told them, "If I can do it, you can do it. Anyone can witness. If you are able to give one of these away as a result of witnessing, I'll get you another!" An Offer you Can’t Refuse Confused? Don’t know how to logon to our camp’s website?
Don’t know the difference between a gigabyte or a pillow fight? DON’T GET
MAD, GET JIM! Jim Loehman will teach you from scratch, if need be. He will help you determine your requirements and will even go with you to the store,
help you pick out a computer (you supply the money), and teach you how to get
on the Internet and read the camp newsletter. All this for free! Such a deal! Don’t
pass this one up! 100-Day
Countdown Ends Soon The 100 Day Countdown,
which began January 17, ends April 26. By then, you have hopefully saved one
dollar a day for the Faith Fund, making a total of $100. Please return it to
our Camp President by April 30th so he can remit it towards the
State Convention Faith Fund goal of $225,000. Thank for more money for more
Scriptures to win more souls for Jesus. Say “I
Love You” With
Living Memorial Bibles What with high school
and college graduations and Mothers Day coming up soon, now is the time to get
your supply of In Recognition, Thinking of You and In Memory
cards. Order them online (www.gideons.org), from a merchandise order
blank, or contact Memorial Bible Chairman Garland Tucker at 785-0404. In Memory: Daniel P.
Harris, 86 went to be with the Lord on March 20, 2002. He was bedridden for
the last 8-10 years and is preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Virginia
Harris.
Dan was an active member of Longview United Methodist Church and
Gideons International. He was employed with the Department of Community
Colleges for 31 years and was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force. Those that knew Dan loved him. He was
in the Raleigh East Camp for many years and was a very faithful Gideon who
always took care of Bible distributions. Gold Hotel Bibles were his
trademark because that was his favorite color. It seemed that the hotels
under his charge had nothing but gold Bibles for many years. Dan and Virginia
would spend nearly every Sunday going to retirement homes and talking to the
people about Jesus. Those who knew him will miss him terribly. But we know he
has gone to a better place with Virginia and Jesus. The family invites you to leave a
memory or message in the Guest Book by going to www.montlawn.com and clicking on
Remembrance Registry. Or send In Memory donations to the Gideons. In Recognition:
Sam and Karen Spilman, who are moving to Florida
April 27, 2002 as a result of his job promotion. Our State Cabinet will be
minus one heck of a good State Secretary. And our camp will sorely miss these
two faithful members whom we have come to love. I worked with Sam as newsletter
co-editor during last year’s International Convention in Charlotte and as
co-publicity chairman on this year’s State Convention. I have told more than
one person (including his mother!) that I have grown to love and respect Sam
almost as a son. When I asked him if he could share some final words of wisdom
to the camp before his departure, Sam sent the following: e-mail: sam.spilman@pgnmail.com Learned at the March
camp meeting: Under the new
Comprehensive Church Relations Program, the camp president, in coordination
with the church assignment chairman, assigns each church to a particular Gideon
(church representative), or a two-man team. The function of the Church Representative
is to: 1. Develop a relationship with the pastors and
congregations assigned to him. 2. Secure attendance from the church for the Pastors
Appreciation Banquet. 3. Secure the Church Service. 4. Promote the Memorial Bible Program. 5. Secure Membership Recommendations. Church Speaking Opportunities Church Assignment
Chairman Doug Schmidt would like to encourage any of our speakers (prospective
and otherwise) to order an excellent new book entitled Church Speaker
Development. It is available free from Gideons International (form 213).

Garland
Tucker recently received $500 from a church with less than 12 people. Ray
Cooksey spoke at a church in Hope Mills (Fayetteville West) on Palm Sunday,
March 24. When it was prayer time a young lady in the choir stood up and said,
“I want to thank the Lord for the Gideons. Just a few years ago, when I was in
college, I saw these men handing out little Bibles on campus. I thought to
myself how silly that was, but I got one. A couple of days later I went out
drinking with my boy friend and we had a fight. About three o’clock in the
morning, I was in need of some spiritual help. I rummaged through my backpack
and found that little Bible. I started reading it and it answered my spiritual
concerns. Two years later, I gave my heart to the Lord because of that little
Bible.” Ray said, “She gave a
much better report than I did!” Jail
Ministry Special night for
the Auxiliary: It was Palm
Sunday, March 24, time for our camp’s monthly visit to Wake County Jail. For
the first time in three months, the Auxiliary was able to visit the women
residents. Exciting news—new Auxiliary member, Liz Merrill, made her first
visit to the jail. She really enjoyed the visit, jumped right in and is looking
forward to returning! Her husband Cliff (acting Wake County Jail Chairman)
says, “I am very proud of Liz and encouraged by her participation in the
Auxiliary and the jail ministry. She now understands why I enjoy it so much!” The 21-day man: Charlie Rabb was still on the street outside the
jail when he met a man who appeared very distraught. Charlie grabbed a PWT
(Personal Worker’s New Testament), walked up to him and said, “Can I help you?”
The
man said, “What do you mean?” Charlie
said, “You just look like you need someone to talk to.” It
turns out the man was getting ready to enter jail for the first time in his
life. It was Sunday evening, the beginning of his 21-day work-release sentence.
For the next 21 days, he would work outside during the day but spend his nights
in jail. He was very troubled and didn’t know where to turn. Charlie
asked him, “Do you know Jesus Christ as your Savior?” “No,”
was the answer. Charlie took out his PWT and went over God’s plan of salvation
with him. Then he placed God’s Word in the man’s hands. “They’re
not going to let me take that in there,” the man said, now in tears. “Oh,
they’ll let you take it in,” said Charlie. The
man said he would read it and study it and think about what Charlie said to
him. As Charlie was getting on the elevator with Cliff Merrill to visit
prisoners, he looked down the hallway and saw the man one more time. He was
waiting for an officer to take him to his cell. The man raised that little
Bible up at him as if to say, “It’s going to be all right, now.” Later,
Charlie and Cliff visited a Bible study group and juveniles on the eighth and
ninth floors. But all that night, Charlie prayed for that 21-day man. The rest of the
story: Besides Dot and Liz, the Gideons were represented by (photo, l - r): Monty Daniels, John Dillard, J.P. Morris, Cliff Merrill, Charlie Rabb, Ray Cooksey, Tom Wallace, Steve Blackmon and Richard Justice.
The residents wanted
many prayers that evening, both group and individually. Several residents
inquired about our next return, hoping that we would be back the next week.
They were mindful of the upcoming Easter weekend! Cliff says, “Thanks for your
help and may God Bless you for your service to HIM.” Butner
Prison Ministry Dwight
is leaving Butner Prison within a week or two. He has been a very faithful
singer and good witness. Prison Chairman Tom Wallace says, “I’ll
always remember him as a big, burly, gigantic-looking fellow with big eyes and
deformed hands with big stubby short fingers. He’s having trouble securing a
place to live when he gets out and the prison won’t release him without an
address. The Lord will look after him, I’m sure—he’s just a great friend to all
of us. It’s been a pleasure knowing him. He always greets you with a hug and is
a very devout, good Christian man. Dwight is one of the three or four that
leads the singing and has been there for the three years we Gideons have been
there. We are happy for him because he’s leaving but we‘re sad because we’ll
miss him.” Tom says, “What he is in prison for we
don’t want to know. We don’t ask those kind of personal questions. It’s none of
our business and we don’t want to know because it would break up the friendship
we’ve got going. You get to make friends sometimes and you can get attached to
people like Dwight, especially if they are professed Christians. Your best
friends are your Christian friends, wherever they are.” If you feel led to this ministry, call
Tom Wallace at 919-782-0903. PRAY for this ministry and the prisoners. No money given for
Scriptures is ever used for other expenses. That’s why your dues are so
important. All the administrative expenses—State and International, Gideon
Magazine, the International Convention—are paid strictly from your dues. If
your dues are not paid, you will be dropped from the membership roll as of May
31. Don’t delay—mail them today! MEPS Recruits Need You! A need for backup volunteers exists at the MEPS (Military
Entrance Processing Station). Gideons are needed to present Service Testaments
to new recruits and to witness for Christ. Your mission is to offer free copies
of God’s Word to new recruits while expressing prayers and appreciation for
their service to our country. (Read “USA Military Distribution Guidelines” in
your Gideon Guide Book.) Working hours are terrific—7:30-8:00 a.m. on weekdays
only. Call Carl Nanney at 876-1973. Heavenly Notes 1. Our Auxiliary held a Cabinet meeting on March 26,
during which they made plans for the next few months. They are scheduling a
“Getting to Know You” special feature at the May camp meeting where two new
members tell how they became believers and Auxiliary members. 2. Pray for Richard Justice and Juanita Vickers, new
member training leaders for the Roxboro camp. They are about to wrap it up in
May after camp elections. 3. Praise for the New Member Plan in Burlington which
produced 14 new Gideons. Training has already begun. Pray for many of their
wives to join the Auxiliary. 4. Continue to pray for Eastern Europe Field Representative Victor Goncharenko, recovering in Russia after a
serious car accident, and making progress in physical therapy. Our camp voted to send 20 In Honor Bibles in his name
at our Jan 15 camp meeting. The Maximum Man Conference deals

April 2002 Tar Heel Gideon) The North Carolina State Convention is more like a
family reunion than a convention. This is where the Gideon family comes back
together, where pictures of grandchildren are shown, where old friends slap
each other on the back again. This is where “first-timer” Gideons and Auxiliary
meet new brothers and sisters in Christ and make lifelong friends. This is
where young people create memories together that last forever—with new friends
from some other part of the state or from just next door. So bring your
children and grandchildren to the North Carolina State Convention at the
Raleigh North Hilton Hotel in Raleigh, N.C. An incredible time has been planned
for you and your whole family—a time of praising our Lord Jesus Christ. Please
complete your registration form and mail it in today. If you have misplaced it
