If you visited the BBC link and saw the story about the night they tried to ban smoking in my local pub, here is my answer to Mr Roger Devries:

Roger Devries
I wondered if the smokers realised how ignorant and selfish they were and
in the case of the man who tried to drink outside how foolish he made himself look? "I am british and have a right to clean air." I don't go to pubs very often because I cannot stand the stench.

Roger, if you don't like the smell of smoke then stay away from the pub, no one has missed you so far. I may be ignorant and selfish but tell me if you can if cigarette smoke is so harmful to health then why don't we hear of more suicide by ciggys, I hear of many who use a car exhaust though. This makes me think.

It takes twenty minutes to die from breathing car exhaust in a confined space, I have been smoking Marlborough in the confined space of my lonely bedsit for over thirty five years without dying so far. So just how dangerous is my second hand smoke? compared the the exhaust from your car.

Put the question another way. Multiple choice this time ..

How many times more dangerous do you think my 800 litres of exhaled cigarette smoke is than your motor vehicles 40,000 litres of exhaust fumes?

a. 1/10,000th as dangerous

b. Just as deadly.

c. 10,000 times as lethal.

d. somethng else, E-mail me.

When I worked as a taxi driver, my nightmare job was not the 2am drunk as you may think but the 8:30 AM school run, although the children always brightened my day a lot more, the 30 minutes subsequently spent stuck in traffic chaos and fumes caused by hoards of parents also dropping off their precious cargos (usually one per car!).

I was sorry for the little ones walking to school who would suffer most from the deadly cloud of heavier than air exhaust fumes they were forced to breath each morning.

Carbon monoxide acts very quickly in the blood affecting its ability to deliver oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. The effects take some time to subside, I bet if you were to test those kids in their classroom at 10 am in the morning you would find they are still suffering slightly reduced oxygen to their brain from the earlier exposure to carbon monoxide. I dare anybody to prove me wrong.

So tell me again, who is selfish and ignorant..
