Working with dirt is very rewarding and relaxing!

This web site is a photo album of my personal journey to transform our yard from mainly dirt to a plethora of flower beds, trees and shrubs.

I had a dual purpose for my project which I finished about 7 years ago.

My first goal was to scratch my gardening itch which after 10 years of living in apartments and condo's I never had dirt or grass that I could call my own.
And secondly, to design and plant a collection of trees and shrubs that would provide a private feeling with the houses that are in close proximity. In essence I was looking to create a green wall of privacy.

As I reflect back now, I must have been out of my mind. The scope of the project was huge to undertake all by myself. It's pretty reflective of my personality, when I set my sights on something I make it happen. Even though I spent days soaking my exhausted bones.

This site will show you some of the highlights of the project from planning, excavation to the finished results.

There are more shots of the finished result, but rest assured this is not trick photography. There was a lot of dirt in the back yard as pictured to the left and not even grass after they relieved the area with a back hoe.

Across my family, including my father, mother, brother and sister we all love gardening. I attribute much of it to my Dutch lineage!

Pictured to the left is the back yard after phase one had been completed. Today you can see any of the houses in the distance.

It seemed like years until all the grass filled in. I nursed the grass in the yard like a child with fertilizer and water. It finally came in as thick as a green shag carpet see below.

This is a photo of the same area about a year later after I had more shrubs and extended the flower bed even more.

One of the my spring rituals is spreading over 10 yards of red mulch in all the flower beds. It's always worth the hard work when it's completed
