If you have associated files with a particular
application, (such as .txt files with WordPad,) 
then clicking on that type file will automatically 
open the application.  

Or, a right click on a file opens up a context menu 
and an "Open with" selection.

goes a step further
and allows you to configure applications you may commonly use.
