You can only un-install it and then manually check for updates by visiting the Windows Update Site *"at your own leisure"*. To un-install that component, please read the following: 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. Select Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification. 4. Click Add/Remove. Now you can visiting the Windows Update Site via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com every once in a while in order to see if there are new critical updates for your computer.
