BEYOND THE MASK: Untold Stories of U.S.-Navy Filipinos

For Filipinos without special or college training and no immediate relatives in America, the U.S. Navy was a hope for better life. Beyond the stereotypical images are the discrimination of these hardy sailors and a continuing story of careers, struggles, triumphs, and contributions both in their homeland and adopted country, the United States.

Today, these men and their families form a significant segment of the Filipino-American communities. Their children are graduating from colleges and military academies and establishing themselves as up-and-coming leaders of the 21st century. Yet, they are little studied as a group by historians and researchers. Author Riz A. Oades changed all that.

Drawing from the personal accounts of Senior Chief Juan Victor Ruiz and other enlisted sailors to Rear Admiral Eleanor Mariano, his book tells about their motivations for joining, military training, overseas deployment, romances, moments of fun, family relations, retirement, and role in community building.

Only the recollections of the sailors and their family members can convey the hard facts of Navy lives and the same holds true of daily routine, challenges, excitements, and stressful situations that war creates.

Beyond the Mask is the first-ever book about naval personnel, their families and friends, and the countless others that have been touched by the U.S. Navy.
