Dock landing ship (LSD) officials were met by
Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Security officers led
by Col. Carlitos Mallari and Major Robert Quenery,
Ship's officials. They paid a courtesy call
on Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chairman
Felicito Payumo.
       Some 700 sailors, 50 of them Filipinos, will be
permitted liberty nights during their stay in Olongapo
City and Subic town, should the  ship's officials and
Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA)
coordinators decided to allow them out of the
freeport.
       The local entertainment industry however,
opened their businesses earlier than usual getting
ready for the US servicemen to make their free stay
during the ship anchorage in Subic.
3 Guided missile frigate docks at Subic
 
    SUBIC BAY FREEPORT, Dec. 03 2001(PNA) -- A U.S. guided missile
frigate docked at Alava pier here last Saturday for a four-day
visit under the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United
States.
        The USS Vandegrift (FFG-48), an Oliver Hazard Perry (FFG-7) 
Class Guided Missile Frigate carrying 218 officers and crew, was met at the
pier by Subic Bay Metorpolitan Authority (SBMA) officials.
        Ship officials led by Commander Robert A. Bonner, made a 
Courtesy call call on SBMA Chairman Felicito Payumo.
        Payumo welcomed the ship's officials and briefed them on  
Subic's development--the conversion of the former US Naval facility into a
prime industrial and tourism facility.
        Lt. JG Dan Huber, information officer of the Frigate, said the 
Visit is not related to any war exercises but for rest and recreation (R&R)
and community works.
        The local entertainment industry both inside and outside the
freeport have opened their businesses earlier than usual for the
visiting servicemen, while the Philippine National Police (PNP) had
maximized its visibility for the security of the sailors having their
liberty in various clubs and recreation facilities in Olongapo City.
        P/Supt. Orlando Madella, Olongapo City Police Office (OCPO)
director, has deployed his men in the red light districts to conduct
24-hour monitoring and assistance to US servicemen while they are
having their R & R in the city.
        USS Vandegrift, the 42nd ship of the FFG-7 built by Todd
Pacific, Shipyards Corp. in Seattle, Washington, is home-ported in
Yokosuka, Japan.
        Vandegrift participated recently in a midshipmen exchange
program with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force which allowed
Vandegrift to visit Kure, Japan.
        Vandegrift's mission is to escort and protect convoys,
underway replenishment groups, amphibious landing groups and carrier
battle groups.
        The ship's missile, gun and anti-submarine warfare systems,
combined with her quick reaction and high-speed capability, make her
a valuable asset in today's multi-threat environment.
        Last month, another US ship, the USS Germantown (LSD-42) with
800 personnel on board, also docked at Subic port for a four-day

SUBIC BAY RECRUITING STATION MEMORIAL

Dear Sir,

  I am Petty Officer Nathaniel Laxa, currently stationed in Sasebo, Japan.  I would like to as you a favor. You have a section pertaining to Filipinos in the U.S. Navy.  I joined the navy in Subic Bay in 1986.  There is a lot of pride that runs among us specially those who joined in P.I.  I have a small suggestion.  Maybe with the help of our brother Filipinos, specially those who joined in Subic we can preserve the Recruiting Station at the former Naval Base in Olongapo.  I am suggesting that we all get together so we can petition the local government of Olongapo if we can kinda adopt the former recruiting station building and make it to a museum.  There are lots of fond memories for us that we left behind.  I f you can disseminate this on the web, please I need your help guys!  Those in favor of this simple idea, contact me through my e- mail address; Laxa69@hotmail.com
