IT'S OUR CHAOS

Jana Bommersbach
Author, Phoenix magazine columnist

I listened with interest to President Bush's comments to the United Nations this week and was struck by these words: "Events during the past two years have set before us the clearest of divides. Between those who seek order and those who spread chaos; between those who work for peaceful change and those who adopt the methods of gangsters{ellipsis}" And I wanted to weep because most of the world thinks those condemning words belong on the head of George W. Bush and the United States.

WE are seen as the spreaders of chaos and the gangsters who don't respect law and order. It is still - even as I watch American men and women dying daily in Iraq - unimaginable to me how this country ever let this happen. We certainly no longer have to wonder why so much of the world hates us.
