march 18, 2005 copwatch meeting mike1, mike2, stacy, gaby, and sean attended he meeting 1) we asked what is the status of the shirts john is supposed to be making? maybe john can answer that. 2) when will the web site expire, or better said when will copwatch stop owning www.phoenixcopwatch.org url and have to renew it. john offered to ask andrew about this a couple of meetings ago. maybe john or andrew can answer that. 3) how did the march 15 protest go? maybe 50 people attended it. it was on the front page of the spanish weekly newspaper la prensa near the bottom. i dont know if anyother media reported on it. 4) patrols. the team b april 1 patrol will probably need some people form team a since stacy and sean will not be able to go. also it will have to be a driving patrol because the tempe festival of arts is that day and mill avenue and downtown tempe will be pretty much closed off. anybody from team a want to go on the patrol. 5) we talked about that we need to start giving more copwatch training classes so new people can join copwatch. does anybody besides katey give the class. mike said we should make a video to help train people. the other mike didnt like that idea. mike also said we should make some outlines so any copwatch member can give the training class. 6) stacy said shareef the denver copwatch guy who patrol with us in phoenix needs a maybe $2,000 or so for a lawyer and talked about fund raising for it. i think she said drew had the full story but drew didnt make the meeting. 7) we had great luck telling the media about the march 15 protest. six tv stations showed up to videotape it.and several reporters from printed papers came too. we could have gotten a lot of media coverage for copwatch but we didnt. but we didnt do a good job telling the media what the protest was about. there was nobody from copwatch at the protest to talk to the media. they wanted to know what the protest was all about. also a number of media called john on the copwatch phone but for whatever reasons he didnt have the information they wanted. i think if we plan this out next time we can get a lot more publicity for copwatch. also usually the arizona republic printes my press releases. but for somereason they didnt write about the march 15 protest. 8) everybody griped that the new location at the counter culture cafe on 24th and mcdowell sucks because it is hard to get there by bus from tempe. you need to take two buses. 9) we didnt talk about this but at the last meeting i said i would look for a lawyer and check about suing the scottsdale and asu cops. i will try to do that this month. stuff happened last month and i couldnt do it. mike ps - this is the first time i have ever taken notes at a copwatch meeting
