Man dies after scuffle with neighbors and deputies
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- The Pima County Sheriff's Department is investigating how a man died after scuffling with neighbors and deputies who were trying to arrest him.
Jorge Alberto Leon, 31, died while reportedly resisting arrest on Tuesday.
The two deputies who restrained Leon did not shoot him or use a Taser or other type of lethal or less-than-lethal force, said Deputy Dawn Barkman.
Witnesses told authorities that the incident started when Leon assaulted his 69-year-old neighbor. When deputies arrived, Barkman said they found several people trying to restrain Leon.
So deputies handcuffed Leon and restrained his ankles. While taking Leon to a patrol car, he became unconscious, Barkman said.
Deputies performed CPR, but Leon died at St. Mary's Hospital.
Investigators are waiting on autopsy and toxicology reports to see if drugs or alcohol could have led to Leon's violent outburst. Barkman said detectives are also looking into the actions of the deputies to see if they responded appropriately.
