Phoenix police officers shot and killed two men early Friday in separate confrontations, both involving suspects who pointed firearms at officers, authorities said.

In the most recent incident, police dispatched officers to a house in the 4600 block of West Poinsettia Drive, just south of Cactus Road after a 911 hang-up call around 7:30 a.m. Responding officers knocked on the door and were met by a man with a rifle, according to police spokesman Sgt. Randy Force.

The man exchanged words with the officers, then raised the rifle and pointed it at the officers, who responded by firing five to six shots. The man, whose identity has not been released, was worked on by Glendale Fire Department paramedics but died of his wounds.

Force said police had received several calls within the past day or two, apparently from the man's father, who relayed that his son was acting strangely and being possibly on drugs. The spokesman said it's unknown whether substance abuse played any role in the police confrontation Tuesday.

Early in the day, Phoenix police shot and killed an armed man in the back yard of a home near 36th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

Two officers were looking for the driver of a stolen car when police say they encountered the man.

Force said based on preliminary information, the officers fired five shots after the man pointed a gun at them. Police said the man might have opened fire first.

The suspect was dead at the scene.
