WEST PHOENIX - Lowrider enthusiasts will gather this weekend in downtown Phoenix, but police are gearing up for the expected traffic impact miles away in Maryvale.
That's because motorists leave the show and head for the west Phoenix area, cruising all weekend and creating traffic headaches, police said.
To ease congestion and to avoid gridlock, officers have announced a road closure and other traffic restrictions.
Action also is taken so motorists can't pull up side by side, creating the possibility for street racing or confrontation between rival groups, said Lt. Charlie Consolian, a Maryvale Precinct supervisor.
The 27th-annual Arizona Low Rider Super Show is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Phoenix Civic Plaza.
"Everybody tries to get ready for this," said Leonard Ruelas, a worker at Hopper's Hydraulics, 4020 NW Grand Ave., which puts hydraulic systems in lowrider vehicles.
Richard "Grumpy" Ayone, a member of the Slow Lane Car Club, a group of lowrider devotees, said, "I've been going to the show for the last 10 years."
There will be restrictions Saturday from 6 p.m. until Sunday at 2 a.m., and from Sunday at 5 p.m. until Monday at 2 a.m.
Traffic on Thomas and McDowell roads will be restricted to the curb lane between 40th and 55th avenues. Also, 43rd Avenue will be closed between Thomas and McDowell, except for local residents, police said.
Traffic on 51st Avenue between Thomas and McDowell will be limited to the curb lane.
