Corrections officer fatally stabbed in fight
PHOENIX (AP) -- A state corrections officer was fatally stabbed during a New Year's party at a home near Buckeye early Sunday, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department reported.
Vincent Cannon died of his injuries at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix early Sunday, sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Allen said. His exact age was not available, but Allen said he was in his 30s.
According to Allen, Cannon was with a group of friends at a house in rural Buckeye, with a second group of people. She said all had apparently been partying and drinking.
Around midnight, a man identified as Jeremiah Sturmer, 26, began discussing tattoos with several people inside the home. The discussion became heated and a fight broke out. Sturmer allegedly stabbed three people in the home, then left and stabbed Allen in the front yard.
The three people stabbed while in the house suffered non-life threatening injuries, Allen said.
Sturmer left in a car that was later stopped by officers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Allen said. He was arrested by Maricopa County deputies and booked into jail on a first-degree murder charge and three counts of aggravated assault.
Allen said Cannon had worked as a volunteer firefighter with the Buckeye Valley Fire Department for the past two years and was a corrections officer at the Lewis Prison for the past two years.
