Intensive Maryvale law enforcement paying off
Beefed-up police, sheriff's patrols educate community, make arrests

A recent Phoenix Police Department analysis showed Maryvale has a higher rate of crime than other parts of the city. The precinct recorded the most homicides, robberies and aggravated assaults than any other from July through October 2005.

To fight back, Phoenix police and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office have flooded three key areas of the community with officers and deputies since Jan. 2. Those target areas are between 39th and 71st avenues, from Campbell Avenue to McDowell Road. advertisement

Lt. Charlie Consolian said the Maryvale Revitalization Enforcement Project is paying off.

"I think we've thwarted some crimes that would have occurred had we not been in the area," Consolian said.

The second part of the program is education. Consolian said officers conduct safety checks at apartment complexes and speak with residents on how to partner with police.

Status: Police, sheriff's deputies and armed posse members have made 300 arrests as of Feb. 12. The program runs through March 31.
