PHOENIX - A Phoenix firefighter and his former colleague were back in jail Thursday in connection with the torching of a luxury home in December 2003.

Christopher Bishop, 38, and Joseph Avey, 36, have been charged with arson and first-degree burglary. Avey also was charged with burning two vehicles and making fraudulent insurance claims.

The pair were arrested nearly two years ago but released because authorities did not have enough evidence to charge them. But they have it now, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday.

Bishop, Avey and Darryl Lanning, 45, were Phoenix firefighters when authorities believe they burned down a $1.5 million Peoria home. Arpaio said a Peoria firefighter, who also is a contractor, worked on the estate and paid the men several hundred dollars to torch it out of vengeance because the owner didn't pay him in entirety for services rendered.

The Peoria firefighter has not been charged in the case.

Lanning, who left the Fire Department shortly after the home burned, has been in jail since November on related charges. Bishop is still employed with the Phoenix Fire Department, but Avey resigned shortly after the initial arrest.

Authorities said additional arrests could be ahead.
