Teenager files suit over corrections officer's alleged actions
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A teenager who claims he was seduced by a corrections officer while serving time in a juvenile correctional facility has sued the female officer, the state and the director of the Catalina Mountain School.
According to the lawsuit filed Tuesday in Pima County Superior Court, Amy Lynn Barker persuaded the then 15-year-old boy to run away from a halfway house and then rented motel rooms and an apartment so they could carry on their affair.
At the time, Barker was 21. She is now 24.
A Pima County Superior Court judge on Monday sentenced Barker to five years' probation, ordered her to follow sex offender rules and stay away from adolescent boys after she pleaded guilty to solicitation of unlawful sexual conduct.
The suit claims the state and the school director failed to properly investigate Barker's suitability for the job and failed to supervise the school's staff and premises.
The teenager, who is now 18, is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, plus attorneys' costs. Although the suit doesn't specify an amount, a $1 million claim was filed previously with the state.
