23 viii. Katharina Nigl, born 05 Aug 1806 in Bischofsreut, Germany.

Notes for Katharina Nigl:

Single. She was probably the mother of both illigitimate children Jakob Berger and Josef Madl. Per FbI Grainet 95.

The 47 year old Katherine Nigl joined the family of Josef Stadler. She was unmarried, but had a 16 year old son, Jakob Berger, by the tenant farmer's son, Michael Berger, and the 10 year old boy, Josef Madl, by Mathias Madl, son of a renter from Bischofsreut. She herself was the daughter of renters, whose parents were dead, and she had no prospects for her own household. She was a marked woman, because she had 2 children by 2 different fathers. The authorities noted this situation - in a memorandum - on the occasion of her investigation. She had no assets and therefore relied on the 300 gulden which her brother, Johann Nigl, who, as a tenant farmer in Schellzipf, owed to her from the sale of some property (StAL Rep. 164, Verz. 22, NR. 515, fol. 3, vom 4, April 1855). However, the authorities considered this insufficient assets (fol. 2, vom 4, same date). In this difficult personal situation, she hoped for a better future than with the eight member Stadler family. She thought that, with the help of her children, she could better provide for her livelihood somewhere else than here. The community declared that "she, Katherina Nigl, together with her children, were free and unhindered to leave (fol. 5, vom 2, same date)." This "certificate of good conduct and wealth" was also signed by the parish priest, to whom such a dissolute individual in the village must have been a thorn in the eye. "One would be happy to be rid of this immoral individual". =From book by Prof. Fegert. Side note: This entry is for historical evaluation only and not to legitimize old customs and/or beliefs.

Notes for Josef Nigl:

The village of Langreut never is established as planned, today it is a hamlet of

about 6 homes. Josef Nigl gave part of his grant to his brother Michael Nigl who moved across the road to Josef at Langreut # 43, this later became the homestead of the

Madl family, ( Norbert, ect.) Josef Nigl also gave a portion to his brother Franz Xaver

Nigl, who established the hamlet of Schnellzipf , about 5 km to the north of Langreut.

The remainder of the Grund was lost, when Bavaria became a Republic, and annexed the Church lands of Passau. Part of the Grund now lay in Bohemia, and became part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Josef was a colonist of Langreut. Per information Charles Nigl provided (August 2004) Main source: Norbert Madl.

24. Michael5 Nigl (Johann4, Johann3, Thomas2 Niggl, Udalrik1 Nigl) was born 17 May 1811 in Bischofsreut, Germany, and died 28 Mar 1878 in Langreut #43, Niederbayern, Germany. He married A. Maria Madl 19 Aug 1838 in Grainet, Germany, daughter of Johann Madl and Eva Brandl. She was born 10 Jul 1813 in Bischofsreut, Germany, and died 22 Aug 1892 in Langreut #43, Niederbayern, Germany.

Notes for Michael Nigl:

Single at his marriage. Died from nervousness at age 66. In the document of daughter Kreszenz, granting permission to marry: "known as

Hansmichel.". In an announcement from May 1, 1855, concerning the intended emigration to America, listed as number 9: "Michael Nigl and his wife Anna Maria, tenant farmers from Bischofsreut, with six children." (From county Freyung, Grafenau, page 206).

From Fegert, Friedemann: "You can't imagine what can happen in America." Recent Emigration from Rodungsdorf, District of Passau, to North America Since the 19th Century.

The 44 year old tenant farmer Michael Nigl from Langreut (near Bischofsreut), his wife Anna Maria and their children, ages 2-17, wanted to join the venture of Johann Kellermann. They already dissolved their farm and received 250 gulden for the animals and house furnishings. This raised their assets to 1200 gulden, which was sufficient for emigration. However, they appeared reluctant to file this application because,"they had learned of the uncertainties of this plan. However, they remained firm in their decision, because they were aware that if they waivered in this matter, which was always possibly, they would have to provide a further explanation for this.

The notification of their intent to emigrate in the official register resulted in a complaint from Katharina Burger, born Sulzinger, from Passau, the wife of a captain. The Nigls owed her 300 gulden "marriage surety" plus 4% interest since the previous year. Already on May 11, 1855,

Michael Nigl declared at a summons that he would repay her in gulden the interest due on May 15. This meant also that he would not have the 300 gulden at his disposal that was necessary for the emigration. Therefore it was suggested that on the same day he inform the regional court officer that "he was withdrawing his request for emigration to North America, and after serious consideration of the risks of such a venture, decided to remain in his homeland; therefore he gave instructions not to continue processing his application." (StAL. Rep. 164, Verz. 22, number 516, page 9 from May 11, 1855).

It appears that in this case the officials of the regional court in Wolfstein realized one of their few successes in a difficult and sometimes hopeless job of dissuading those planning to emigrate from pursuing their intended plan. They seem to have succeeded in making it clear to Michael Nigl, the head of the family, that remaining assets of 900 gulden would not be sufficient for the journey of an eight member family to America. One day later, Franz Schmid, who also belonged to Johann Kellermann's group - mentioned above - also withdrew his

application. It is possible that Michael Nigl and Franz Schmid agreed together to take this action."

74 vi. Alois Nigl, born 03 Nov 1820 in Bischofsreut, Germany.

Notes for Alois Nigl:

Occupation: shoemaker journeyman. According to Norbert Madl, Alois (the same person as brother Georg?) Nigl, born 1820, a shoemaker journeyman from Bischofsreut, was found guilty in September 1854 of the crime of second degree fraud by the falsification of a private document, resulting in damage to the teacher Jakob Mayer from Freyung, and was sentenced to 4 years in the house of correction.

It is possible that he avoided the sentence by flight to America, because in 1855 he applied for departure to America and wanted to travel with Johann Blöchl. Apparently two of his brothers had emigrated years earlier.

When his intent was made public, Sophia Bayer from Wolfsgrub, community of Pimperle, local court of Winterberg in Bohemia, came forward. She indicated that she had learned that Alois Nigl from Bischofsreut intended to go to America.

She had an illegitimate child by him and was again pregnant by him. The child was already two years old, and she hadn't received any money for the costs of the birth of the child or any support. To her knowledge, Nigl had some assets which he was going to take with him at his departure. Therefore, she filed for support for her children.

Nigl's mother, with the name Pruller in her second marriage, living in Salzweg, declared that she was prepared to pay Sophia Bayer 50 gulden in the event her son Alois required this for permission to emigrate.

Sophia Bayer agreed to this, providing the money was either deposited with the court or paid to her in cash. She also stated that she held another loan against Nigl for a 30 gulden banknote, or 15 gulden in Bavarian money, which she had loaned him in cash three years earlier. Nevertheless, she stated that she would be satisfied with the promised 50 gulden. Per AtA Landshut, Rep. 164/22, Nr. 509 and Norbert Madl.

76 viii. Eduard Nigl, born 13 Apr 1824 in Bischofsreut #10, Germany.

Notes for Eduard Nigl:

He lived with his mother Theres Pruller in Salzweg and in 1853/1854 applied for departure to America. He wanted to go as a carpenter to New York, because there were greater opportunities for earning a livelihood there.

As both of the single tenant farmers sons Edmund (?) and Georg Nigl from Bischofsreut filed for their application to emmigrate in 1854, the royal pension (?) office in Wolfstein filed a complaint that Georg Nigl, who had twice infringed on forest regulations (theft of wood), together with an accomplice, had been fined a total of 192 Gulden as payment of damages, penalties and costs. As rebuttal, Georg Nigl stated in a document that his mother married again in Salzweg (near Passau) and never looked after him too much. He didn't even receive the right of domicile in her new residence, and therefore has absolutely no assets.

Therefore his friend Maria Madl from Bischofsreut, who was also willing to emigrate, placed at his disposal the 150 gulden needed to emigrate. The community, called upon for a statement, declared that "it also wished for him to emigrate, because if Nigl isn't compelled to emigrate, in the end the community will have to support him as he can't find work in this region. By this admission it became clear that with the refusal of domicile in the new address of his mother, the community refused to provide any additional welfare services for Georg Nigl, as also had his original home community refused to continue his support.

Georg Nigl himself admits: "The reasons for his plan are very simply that he will be able to support himself much better on the other side of the ocean than to remain in his present situation, with the lack of carpentry work in which he was experienced." The authorities accepted this argument and the royal treasurer assumed the financial responsibility for the repayment of the theft of wood.

Maria Madl again confirmed to the community administration of Leopoldsreut that she has 400 gulden, which she had saved, mainly during her long tenure of service, and was also to receive some gulden from her father's estate, According to a statement from the community, she had worked for 6 years for the innkeeper Andreas Schiessl in Bischofsreut, who also has an additional 150 gulden for her. Also, over a period of time, she loaned estate owner Xaver Madl 154 gulden and was to receive 60 gulden as inheritance from her father. The savings from her long years of sevice provided the main financing source for the emigration of the couple. Brother Edmund Nigl, whose mother cared very little about him, received 100 gulden from his father, master baker Michael Nigl, and 50 gulden from Paul Haidl, and "is certain that he has better prospects for a livelihood as a carpenter in the United States." In the attempt to collect an outstanding tax of 10 gulden, the regional court found "no attachable property" and determined that Edmund Nigl had even turned over clothing to a person who had paid a debt for him during the construction of the railroad. Upon inquiry, the community administration communicated "that Edmund Nigl, some time ago, received funds in the amount of 100 gulden from Kajetan Haidl from Bischofsreut. The community doesn't know if he still has the funds or has already spent it all. He also has claim against the survivors of the deceased brother, Johann Nigl from Bischofsreut, for 40 gulden, which he loaned him. The court will have to ascertain if this can be made liquid."

These facts, which first became known after the departure, show on one hand the negative judgement of the native community and on the other hand the shrewdness of Eduard Nig; but also the poverty of both tenant farmers' sons from Bischofsreut. Even work on the construction of the railroad was apparently insufficient to improve the income situation. The fact that he ran up so many debts could also indicate that he possibly drank or gambled away a lot of the money.

Translated from German: "He attended the public school in Bischofsreut. His teachers were Georg Kremsreither and Michael Zeyns and he learned the shoemaker trade. If he was in the Prussian-Austrian Brother-War of 1866, or in the German- French War 1870/71 I don't know. But since he married after 1871 , it is assumed, that he was in the last mentioned war. On Feb. 13th, 1872 he married Kreszenz Nigl in the Church of Grainet. She was born on Oct. 30, 1843 in Langreut, daughter of the Langreuter settlers Josef Nigl and his wife Theresia Weishäupl. In the year of their marriage they decided - Hermann and Kreszenz Stadler, like so many from Bischofsreut and surrounding area to emigrate to America. Josef Nigl, married with Karolina Blöchl, a brother of Kreszenz joined them in the emigration. They landed in Kansas City, KS. And came to Oshkosh, WI. There they lived on 228 Ohio Street. He married Veronika Stadler 25 Nov 1843 in Grainet, Germany, daughter of Josef Stadler and Therese Kloiber. She was born 25 May 1814 in Auerbergsreut, Germany, and died 05 Jun 1853.

Notes for J. Evangelist Nigl:

J. Evangelist Nigl took over the maternal estate. In September 1852, he was reported missing. "on Monday, September 13th, he left the tenant Johann Nigl from Bischofsreut and went to Schärding and environment in order to collect money for the Schwamm (sponge, fungus or mushrooms) (Holzschwamm von Baumstämmen= wood fungus/mushrooms from tree trunks). Nigl arrived in Passau on September 15th, stayed a few hours with his cousin, Kajetzan Nigl, a soldier with the royal infantry regiment Seckendorff, and about 8:00 in the evening left Passau to stay overnight at the innkeeper Scharrer in Ilz. His cousin accompanied him to the end of the Danube bridge, and clearly saw him take the street through Anger. Because Johann didn't arrive at the innkeeper Scharrer, and also didn't return again to Bischofsreut, it is suspected that perhaps on the way through the Holzgarten (wood garden, a place near a river where firewood and lumber was collected), he met with foul play, especially since he had with him a large leather sack with about 40 to 50 Gulden, and a large silver double-cased pocket watch with Roman numbers, which was wound from the back. Nigl is about 40 years old, has thinning blond hair, gray eyes, a full set of teeth and no beard. He was wearing a blue cloth Spencer (shirt) with dark buttons, a scarf, black summer trousers with blue stripes and ankle boots."

Whether Johann Nigl fell victim to robbery, we don't know. In any event, his body washed up in Neudeck on the Danube on September 27. An autopsy was performed, and the cause of death stated as angina pectoris/choking catarrh. He was buried in Alkoven.

At that time, his widow Veronika, born Stadler, was pregnant with her 8th child. She died in Bischofsreut on June 5, 1853, the same day her child was stillborn.

The estate came under the guardianship of J. Blöchl, and in 1855 was purchased by Mathias Madl, an ancestor of the current "Mathiasl" in Bischofsreut.
