B-29 Units In Korea

On 25 June 1950, North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel to attack South Korea.

As a response to the invasion, the USAF attached several Strategic Air Command (SAC)
units to the Far East Air Forces (FEAF) for combat. Eighth Air Force, however, played a
minimal role in this conflict. In fact, only one Eighth Air Force unit, the 27th Fighter
Escort Wing (FEW) at Bergstrom AFB, Texas, received a call to arms. Initially, SAC
deployed the 31st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS), while B-29s from the 22nd,
92nd, and 19th Bomb Groups (BGs) flew to the theater to form the FEAF Bomber
Command. Later, the 98th and the 307th BGs augmented the original B-29 units. The
B-29s launched a devastating strategic bombing campaign against North Korea, and by
late September 1950 all significant strategic targets were destroyed. These units did not
belong to the Eighth Air Force.
