"Hypnosis is a proven alternative to medication, at least in some percentage of the ADD population" (Dr. Patricia Trowbridge)

Is ADD Real?
Are Powerful Psychotropic Drugs THE Answer?

WARNING!!! Those who have been on Ritalin and/or some of the other medications used to treat ADD may not be permitted to join the U.S. Armed Forces and may have a problem securing a job with companies which contract with the U.S. government, especially with certain level security clearance requirements. This is in addition to the potentially severe and permanent side effects these drugs can cause.  Please review the Physician's Desk Reference for the latest knowledge on known affects of these drugs.

ADD TODAY

There is a huge explosion in the number of people, primarily young males, being diagnosed with ADD. Why, suddenly, is a significant percentage of the population unable to function without drugs.
One mother was told by a school official, who diagnosed her son as ADD, that before these drugs were available, her son would have ended up incarcerated.  This official apparently felt that her son, without drugs, was destined to criminal behavior. Why are the prisons not filled with these ADD afflicted persons from previous generations?
Often, the diagnosis begins when an elementary school teacher, following a list of ADD indicative behaviors, refers an unruly child to the school pediatrician or psychologist. Then, in a short time, the child is diagnosed as having ADD and drugs are often the only remedy even mentioned.
The frequency of ADD today seems almost to be of epidemic proportions. Is this a condition which afflicts a large percentage of the human population, or is it the latest vogue disease where we attempt a to fix of a normal human condition?

SHOULD THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS GET ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR EACH CHILD THEY HAVE WHO IS ON RITALIN OR SIMILAR PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS?   IS THIS A CONFLICT OF INTEREST?

SHOULD PARENTS OF CHILDREN DIAGNOSED WITH A.D.D. AND A.D.H.D. BE ENTITLED TO SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY FOR THEIR CHILD?

SHOULD A CHILD BE PUT ON SUCH POWERFUL DRUGS BEFORE ALL OTHER OPTIONS ARE EXPLORED?

From THE PHYSICIANS' DESK REFERENCE , 50th edition, 1996, pg. 848.
"RITALIN, when used should be an integral part of the total treatment program - not the sole treatment. "Long term effects of Ritalin in children have not been well established." "Sufficient data on safety and efficacy of long-term use of RITALIN in children are not yet available. Careful monitoring of blood pressure and close following by a physician is advised for all children on RITALIN. Although a causal relationship has not been established, suppression of growth * (i.e. weight and/or height) has been reported with the long term use of stimulants in children".
Stated reactions include nervousness, insomnia, hypersensitivity, skin rash, urticaria, arthralgia, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema, anorexia, nausea, palpitations, headaches, dyskinesia, blood pressure and pulse changes, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia, weight loss, toxic psychosis, cerebral arteritis, leukopenia, anemia, tachycardia and too many others to list here.
*There have also been reports of retarded growth by 3-6 inches in children on long term therapy. This is now under study with suggestion that using RITALIN only during the school year may reduce this effect.

What's The Problem?
Those diagnosed with ADD have among the highest IQ's and have excessive energy. Does this describe a deficit or does this describe the achievers and leaders of the future?. What is the deficit that warrants medications with such potentially severe side effects?
A local psychologist reports finding only a very small percentage of correctly diagnosed ADD patients. Some question the validity of ADD as a real disease at all.
In her book "Brain Sex", Dr. Anne Moir argues that the normal biology of the male brain explains ADD behavior. Famous American psychologist Diane McGuiness states "Education is almost a conspiracy against the aptitudes and inclinations of the schoolboy....Even more pernicious is the spectacle of young boys on medication for a 'disease' that has no valid diagnosis.
Dr. McGuiness further emphasizes that "hiding the knowledge concerning sex specific aptitudes in learning has done far more harm than good" - for both boys and girls.
Often, behavioral problems have been found to be caused by an underlying food or environmental allergy, problems with minerals or metals in the individuals system, and occasionally diet.

Why Hypnosis?
Since those diagnosed as having ADD are generally the ones with a higher than average I.Q. and excessive energy, doesn't it make more sense to give them tools which allow them to manage their special assets. After all, aren't they the real potential leaders, inventors, entrepreneurs and go-getters of this world?
Are these people deficient, or instead are they above average in some very important areas - intelligence and energy? How many of us wish we had the problem of excess energy and very high intelligence?
Hypnosis is an extremely well proven method to help people manage and utilize their own abilities. Of course, hypnosis is in extensive use as a complimentary therapy for many physical ailments today. But, since ancient Egypt to modern day stop smoking programs, hypnosis has been effectively employed in helping people to modify or control their behavior to improve their lives.
Hypnosis is All Natural, employs the individuals own unique abilities and desires, is very enjoyable and a has a long history of being extremely effective, with improvement noted virtually immediately.
By definition, hypnosis is a state of heightened concentration, increased awareness, elevated alertness, extreme focus and a deep state of relaxation. Perhaps this explains why hypnosis has proven to be so effective for so many suffering from ADD.

Hypnosis and ADD
In August of 1996, a major international conference of professional hypnotists was held by the world's oldest and largest organization of professional hypnotists - The National Guild of Hypnotists. Attendees included professionals from many countries and many specialties, including behavioral therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, dentists, physicians, forensic hypnotists, anesthesiologist hypnotists, clinical hypnotherapists, stage hypnotists, etc., in short, all the professions which use hypnosis, as well as those whose primary specialty is hypnosis.
At this conference, Dr. Azar Korby, M.D. and Jerry Valley, M.A.C.P. (professional hypnotist) reviewed their work with ADD patients. They began researching hypnosis for treatment of ADD as the result of Dr. Korby's son being diagnosed with ADD. Dr. Korby feared the potential side effects his son faced if put on the commonly prescribed drugs. He worked with Jerry Valley and developed effective methods to treat the ADD without drugs (using hypnosis), for his son and for others.
Also, Dr. Patricia Trowbridge presented the results of her work with a large number of ADD patients, young and old. She reported a virtual 100% rate of success in helping them to manage their symptoms.
We, at Potentials Unlimited have also worked with people diagnosed with ADD, both young and older. We also have experienced overwhelming success.
Current experience shows that, as with most things, ADD requires a treatment plan designed specifically for each individual. For some, a few initial sessions permanently solve the problem. For others, monthly, or even weekly sessions are required. But, hypnosis is now a proven method for helping many diagnosed with ADD to manage their symptoms.

WHAT TO DO
The known potential side effects that Ritalin, methylphenidate and other drugs prescribed for those diagnosed with ADD can and do cause, are extremely severe. These harmful effects can last a lifetime.
As noted above, future career and employment opportunities may be limited for those placed on certain drugs to modify their "ADD" behavior.
Treatment with drugs may be the only solution for some people suffering from this psychological or behavioral problem. However, considering the potential consequences, doesn't it make sense to ensure that the diagnosis is valid and that less severe or alternative treatments are not effective, before resorting to these drugs?
Based on the potential for misdiagnosis and the possibility of an underlying systemic cause:

Isn't it worth
1.  Contacting an independent psychologist to secure a second evaluation.
2.  Also consider having an evaluation by a physician who looks at the whole person. Food and environmental allergies, unbalanced or excessive metals, minerals, or vitamins in a person's system are known to cause behavior problems.
3.  Diet has also been traced as the cause of these behaviors in many instances, so contacting a competent nutritionist is also advisable.

Contacting a certified hypnotherapist can help you in this process and often  provide some relief almost immediately.
