Local Serviceman Shakes Hands with President


At 8 a.m. Thurs., Feb. 21, (Feb. 20, 6 p.m. in Vermont) President Bush held a rally at Osan Air Base in South Korea. Staff Sergeant Jonathan Prue, formerly of Newport, was honored to be chosen to stand in front with Bush. Prue was one of 8 chosen out of 8,000 US Air force in South Korea. Prue reports that this exciting event took place in a huge U-2 hangar. From his vantage point, he could see not only the packed hangar but also a crowd outside, some even sitting atop F-16s and other military equipment. There were 6,000 spectators in all, from all branches of the US military which numbers 37,000 in South Korea. Prue was thrilled to shake hands with the President, First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Gen. Schwartz, the Commander of all troops in South Korea. The event was carried live on CNN.

Prue is the son of William and Jeanne Prue, Newport, and grandson of Sylvia Prue, Newport, and William Mackay, Waukesha, Wis. He resides in South Korea with his wife Angela and two daughters. He graduated from North Country Union High School in 1992, holds a BS in Liberal Arts from Regents College, Albany, NY, an AA in Communications Applications Technology from the Community College of the Air Force and is currently pursuing a MS in Telecommunications Management from the University of Maryland. Staff Sergeant Prue is a Cryptologic Linguist, currently serving at the 303rd Intelligence Squadron, Osan AB, South Korea.
