Starla's Obscure Newsstand
This is where i mention a few things that are not disgustingly outdated. No sooner has Jimmy rejoined than D'arcy packs up and leaves. I was very upset for a while, but if we are being realistic, it was bound to happen one day. The current theory is that they have another album to give us before they get sick of it entirely and break up once and for all. James and Billy should live on in solo careers but i don't expect we'll be hearing much from D'arcy or Jimmy. On a completely unrelated note people who know me will know that the HSC is over- and we all survived!! I look forward to reclaiming for myself some semblance of a life. Clear your calanders for my 18th, I don't know what it's going to be yet but it'll be something...
The Pumpkins and this whole Jimmy fiasco
So you've heard something about Jimmy perhaps rejoining the Pumpkins? Why thanks Alison, this sure is news... Ever since they threw him out they have been in need of a good drummer, there's been so many temps, most well known Matt Walker but also ex-Soundgarden's Matt Cameron amongst others. Although there is speculation as to whether or not any of them were offered some kind of permanence in the first place it appears that none really seemed willing to stay...perhaps Billy's obsessive perfectionist nature has something to do with this... For nearly a decade Jimmy was a Pumpkin but recently he has faded into obscurity. If he has managed to clean himself up, it might be nice to have a slightly more heavy sound on their next album (i mourn the lost days of Gish and Siamese Dream). Go HERE to read the Rolling Stone article that started this all...Or Here for even more recent news. Visit the excited Porcelina herself at herOcean Safari PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOW OUTDATED...AND IT WAS TRUE!!! JIMMY IS NOW ONCE AGAIN A PUMPKIN!
I suppose i can't really complain too much about the results, as I always seem to forget to vote. PERFECT came in at 94 whilst AVA ADORE was slightly better at 45. Hey look Fiona "DR WORM" is on now! Number 13... (at least one good song is in the top 20) I'm very happy to inform all of you who didn't notice that Jeff Buckley's posthumous release of EVERYBODY HERE WANTS YOU made 29th, it's nice to know that so many people appreciate it. Eekkk! Talk about overplay... Ben Folds Five may be cool but BRICK at number 12 is ssssooooooo killed by overplay. Pearl Jam popped up 3 times, surprisingly, I thought, as most fans seem to have kind of fallen off the bandwagon recently, i mean how many devoted Pearl Jam fans do you know?? Nice to hear the Whitlams a couple of times there, especially that gorgeous song MELBOURNE (though i can't remember its rank) I have not heard AVENGING ANGELS yet and that has got to be one of the bestest songs of the decade, forget just the year. 11 is THE SWEETEST THING by U2 and i admit i am partial to this song, in fact i could do with hearing it more often. Now comes the big thing, the top 10...SHIT!!! Dammit!! It's the Living End, SAVE THE DAY at 10 (i do hope this is last we'll hear of them). Oh that's nice, HEAVY HEART by You Am I is at 9, You Am I is just one of those bands that you tend not to notice until they suddenly come out with something as good as this, then you realise that almost everything they do is this good and you remind yourself to become more of a fan (only to forget again in 10mins time). Yay!!! THE DAY YOU COME, by that fabulous Aussie band Powderfinger made 8th (yo, have you noticed that so far the top ten has been all-Australian... i suppose that's gotta be positive) HARPOON, by Jebediah somehow got all the way to number 7. 6 looks to be THE SONG FORMERLY KNOWN AS by Regurgitator, those boys have a lovely sense of humour don't you think? Korn's GOT THE LIFE is spoiling the Aussie run with its 5th place position (at least that's better than a.d.i.d.a.s) here comes Hole with CELEBRITY SKIN at 4... definitely not the best song from the cd but the one most played on the radio- coming perilously close to overplay, hey, even Courtney agrees with this. The beautiful Custard got to number 3 with GIRLS LIKE THAT, nice and chirpy. Ben Lee comes from nowhere with a surprising (for me) number 2 of CIGARETTES WILL KILL YOU. This is bad man, this song irritates the hell out of me, but what can i do??? PRETTY FLY FOR A WHITE GUY, the Offspring fooled people somehow into voting for such a song, let's just leave it at that.
THE
one-day music festival in Australia with international acts this year like Korn, Marilyn Manson, Hole, Ash, (some others that obviously didn't catch my attention) and packed full of talented Australians, namely Powderfinger, Regurgitator but also The Living End, Jebediah and stuff. I was torn between seeing Powderfinger (who are wonderful live) or Ash whom i had never seen... Ash won and although i was positively crushed i was right up the front and had a delightful view (which is important for a female) and their set was excellent. I was upset to later learn that all through Powderfinger's set the crowd was chanting for Korn to come on stage. The Korn mosh was the biggest i have ever seen, the people at the back of the mosh were so far away from the stage that Korn would have looked smaller than ants to them. It started raining during Regurgitator but it was kinda nice. How sad, i missed Marilyn Manson because i was holding my excellent position for Hole who were up next. Unfortunately I could still hear him and annoyingly he went 20mins overtime. Hole proceeded to perform almost exactly the same show as the did on Wednesday night at the Enmore Theatre but it was good just the same (I wasn't right up the front for the Wednesday performance) Courtney may be conceited (as my friends who went to her signing confirm) and sometimes a bit bitchy but she certainly is amusing. There were rides, food and the ever entertaining lilypad (which has certainly grown since the Sydney Showground) Please applaud for the plentiful and clean toilets at Homebush, I was most impressed.
For anyone who may have been as unfortunate as to have watched "Kurt and Courtney" i hope you were as suitably disgusted as i was, i mean, what a load of crap. Although many would argue that Hole's sound is somewhat angry (or was more so before Celebrity Skin) Courtney Love is a funny character who nowadays loves to sing "Happy" songs. At the concert i attended she had a go at Eric for putting "Plump" on the set list which he obviously had written, she didn't want to play it, said it was "punk" and that it would make her angry--she played it anyway. "Celebrity Skin" is a blatant pop song that even Hole is sick of hearing by now, like almost all successful songs it is probably the one with the least meaning on the entire cd. They played 4 covers, including a Rolling Stones song (yes, the same one that they played at the BDO) and a Beatles song (which was actually very nice) the other 2 i was unable to identify. At times Courtney flitted around the stage like some kind of Ballerina, and she had this habit of forcefully striking a tambourine against her breast which made every female in the audience wince in sympathetic pain, whilst she herself showed none. The best song of the night? "Northern Star" of course...this was an encore song with just Eric and Courtney on stage, the acoustic guitar with Courtney's best voice sounded absolutely gorgeous. Perhaps i should say a word or two about the encore... Hole promptly upped and left after only about an hour of playing so we the audience patiently waited for their return... 5 minutes later Eric and Courtney came back on stage, Courtney had changed out of her genuine rock star leather (or vinyl) pants and signature weird top thing and was now wearing this funny dancing costume-type leotard with tons of sequins and fluffy puffs at the back (she reminded me of a bunny). Anyway, now is when they played that Beatles song (nice and acoustic) i don't know what it's called, the one that goes "Hey! You've got to hide your love away..." the encore was about 5 songs so it was well worthwhile.
Courtney's lesson in Capitalism: "hey Mr. Security guard, get those girls from there to there up on the stage now"
dubious looks in response
"come on do it, hurry up"
she is obeyed, but with many wary looks
"don't worry they're not gonna hurt me"
girls sit down
"no, back, back, sit further back"
they shuffle slightly back
"no no, further back, i don't want to see you"
Courtney goes over to them, looming above them, shooing them further back until she is satisfied
"I'm going to teach you girls a lesson in capitalism"
-----I did not quite understand this lesson myself, for the rest of the night these girls were ignored and when the show was over they were sent off the stage (no, not backstage either)----
That's all that i can be bothered writing right now, so I'll leave you with the knowledge that Australians are all beautiful, and that we invented garage rock, also Elle makes nice hipster underwear. (That is, if you believe everything that Courtney says)
