>Dreams and stuff like that
I feel the need to write a story. So far this whole year has been in many ways a conspiracy to repress my (somewhat lacking) creative talent. Can you believe that in an entire year (nearly) of senior english I have not written one story! NO!!!! What am I to do if not construct imaginary worlds where everything is as I want it to be? Dreaming is cool, I LOVE to dream, I even enjoy my nightmares. Isn't it fascinating that when your mind is turned off (sleeping, I mean), when you are completely oblivious to what is happening around you, you retreat into the world of your mind? When your mind is supposedly resting and you are free from waking thoughts it suddenly creates this wonderfully elaborate, visual, strange and twisted, experience that is sometimes so real that it is hard to distinguish from reality. I once had this dream (pretty irrelevant, I thought) where I discovered a way of opening my locker without a key, when the next day at school my friend forgot her locker key I started to show her how to open it without a key, before I realised that it had just been a dream (I was very disappointed).
Some people theorise that dreams are your mind dwelling on things that worry you, that are on your mind, that are on your conscience. I'd have to say that that could be correct. An avid silverchair hater, I never had any good reason to be so…they just irritated me quite simply. One night I had a dream where I met the guys from SC and they were really nice, I felt so guilty that I had previously disliked them without reason. Don't get me wrong, I am not now a converted fan, I still can't stand them, but it did bring to my attention my hypocrisy. I hate it when people are intolerant, racist, ignorantly abusive, obtuse, etc, etc. And in a way I suppose I'm not too far superior from all those people. I know a girl whose father will never vote Labor because in Malta, where he immigrated from, the Labor party was ruthlessly oppressive and basically lying bastards who pretty much ruled as despots. I explained to this girl that the 2 parties were not connected in any way, they simply had the same name, but that makes no difference to her father. Imagine that! What would you do if somebody hated you because you had the same name as one of his or her childhood nemeses? People are strange.
There is a fundamental collision between science and mythology/astrology/spiritualism/(and stuff like that) that achieves really nothing but conflict. I'm sure you know what I mean, my point is, conflict is bad. I forget now what it is I set out to discuss so I think that I'll just leave it at that…

Quest for meaning ponders the significance of trivialities
"Faith moves mountains, but you have to keep moving while you are praying." Such is the quote/thought for the day in my day-by-day calendar. What the hell does it mean? In this instance i think that it is fairly obvious, but then so are all of these calendar quotes...they are kept simple to be easily consumed by the masses. Have you ever noticed, however...how absolutely EVERYTHING has a supposed deeper meaning? Does this piss anyone off besides me? It's particularly evident in school essays...and I should know, as i always seem to be in the process of writing one. When Keats, for example idly prosposed the phrase "Beauty is truth, truth beauty" it is my firm belief that he was simply looking for words that were "pretty" and sounded romantic and meaningful. You'd be amazed at the amount of critical discussion there exists about that one uttering, i suppose that the literary critics have to fill their empty days somehow... Did Shakespeare really intend to give every word a specific purpose in relation to his plays/texts? Did he really labour for hours over a single passage, trying to ensure that he affix the absolute correct, excruciatingly detailed meaning to each line? I myself, think not. Imagine the weeks, the months, years, that it would have taken him to complete one play! And after all, we all know that good old Shakespeare was into rampant plagiarism as a (highly refined) literary technique. Some critics have read so far into "Hamlet" (this font won't underline) as to see Hamlet as actually having SEX with his MOTHER!!! My God! (sorry, God) What is the world coming to??? Ironically, I'm learning presently about the various different forms of sentences, paragraphs, devices (!?-()etc) and the way in which they influence the meaning of a piece of writing. However, I was not taught grammer in school (it was dropped from the program), and have never known it...the modern world appears to have given up on such complexities (yes, i know, it is sad...) The majority of the literary works which actually appear to employ these techniques as they were intended are the so-called "classics" (no wonder why Jane Austen takes so long to understand) Finally, I'll leave you (you being me, as this is really only an internal discussion) with the thought that it is a sad sad world when one is made to analyse the movie "The Castle" for its use of film techniques in creating theme, developing characters, and aiding storyline...(as if they gave any thought at all to these things when shooting the film! Its a damn story for crying out loud! Not a work of art...)
