SRS Air Bag Control Unit Replacement

APPLICABILITY SUBARU SVX
SUBJECT: | SRS AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT |
THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED WHEN REPLACING THE SRS AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT. THE SERVICE PROCEDURE TO REPLACE THE SRS AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT DESCRIBED IN SECTION 5-5 PAGE 19 OF THE 1992 SERVICE MANUAL IS INCORRECT.
OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING CAUTIONS WHEN SERVICING THE AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT.
1) | Do not disassemble the airbag control unit. |
2) | If the airbag control unit is deformed, or if water damage is suspected, replace the airbag control unit with a new genuine Subaru part. |
3) | After removal, keep the airbag control unit on a dry, clean surface away from heat, light sources, moisture and dust. |
ALSO REFER TO SECTION 5-5 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR ADDITIONAL SERVICE CAUTIONS AND HANDLING PROCEDURES RELATING TO THE SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM.
1. | TURN IGNITION SWITCH OFF. |
2. | TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL ACTIVATION OF THE SRS AIRBAG AND DAMAGE TO THE SYSTEM, DISCONNECT THE GROUND CABLE FROM BATTERY AND WAIT 10 MINUTES BEFORE SERVICING SRS AIR BAG SYSTEM. |
3. | REMOVE BOTH LOWER DASH TRIM PANEL AND METAL BRACE BELOW THE STEERING COLUMN. |
4. | REMOVE THE GLOVE BOX DOOR. |
5. | REMOVE BOTH SIDE CONSOLE PANELS, REFER TO FIGURE 1. |
6. | REMOVE THE FRONT ASH TRAY AND CONSOLE MOUNTING SCREWS. SLIDE CONSOLE TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. |
7. | APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE AND MOVE THE SHIFTER INTO THE 1ST GEAR POSITION. |
8. | REMOVE THE FOUR SHIFT INDICATOR MOUNTING SCREWS AND SLIDE THE INDICATOR TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. |
9. | DISCONNECT THE YELLOW AIRBAG CONNECTOR BELOW THE STEERING COLUMN, REFER TO FIGURE 2. DO NOT RECONNECT AIRBAG CONNECTOR UNTIL AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT IS SECURELY RE-INSTALLED. |
10. | REMOVE THE LEFT CONSOLE PANEL BRACE. |
11. | REMOVE THE AUDIO EQUIPMENT, REFER TO SECTION 6-2 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. |
12. | LOWER THE CARPET ALONG TRANSMISSION TUNNEL ON THE RIGHT SIDE. |
13. | DISCONNECT THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. |
14. | REMOVE THE RIGHT CONSOLE BRACE, SLIDE IT BACK TOWARDS THE SHIFTER AND OUT TO THE RIGHT, REFER TO FIGURE 3. |
15. | DISCONNECT THE 12-PIN YELLOW, 2-PIN BLUE AND 2-PIN ORANGE CONNECTORS FROM THE AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT, REFER TO FIGURE 4. |
16. | REMOVE THE FOUR MOUNTING BOLTS SECURING THE AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT TO THE BRACKET. USE A T30 TAMPER PROOF TORX BIT, REFER TO FIGURE 5. |
17. | REMOVE THE CONTROL UNIT THROUGH THE AUDIO EQUIPMENT OPENING. |
18. | DISCARD THE OLD TORX BOLTS, AND REPLACE WITH NEW ONES DURING REASSEMBLY. |
19. | REASSEMBLE IN REVERSE ORDER OF THE REMOVAL PROCEDURES. BE SURE TO FULLY SECURE ALL SRS SYSTEM CONNECTORS DURING REASSEMBLY AND CONFIRM THAT ALL GREEN DOUBLE LOCK MECHANISMS ARE ENGAGED. |
20. | NOTE: ALWAYS REPROGRAM THE SECURITY SYSTEM AFTER RECONNECTING THE BATTERY. THEN CONFIRM THE PROPER OPERATION OF THE SECURITY SYSTEM. REFER TO THE SUBARU SVX FLAT RATE MANUAL FOR WARRANTY INFORMATION. |
