Ozzfest '99
Here is my review of Ozzfest 99 I will go band by band and include partial or full set lists if I can. Don't blame me if they are incorrect cause it was a long day.
Drain S.T.H
This was the first band on so I don't remember much but here goes...Forthose whohave never heard them, Drain are an all female four piece band from Sweden who sound kinnda like Alice in Chains. It was quite chilly that morning so their singer said that she liked it here because it reminded her of home (Sweden). I don't know what their set list was because I'm not very familiar with them.
Pushmonkey
Ugh they sucked I only stayed for three songs. In the first song the singer sounded like he was a woman. In the second song he used a megfaphone and played some music on the keypad on it. In the 3rd song he played a trumpet. After them we went to go check out the main stage.
Flashpoint
Didn't make it across the border. So I didn't see them.
Apartment 26
This is Geezer from Sabbath's sons band. Geezer's son is the singer and he isn't a great singer. This band has keyboards, guitars, bass and drums and were never boring but they weren't excellent. I don't really remember what they sounded like
(hed) pe
More border problems. The bassist didn't make it across the border but they played anyways and had Shavo from System of a Down fill in for a couple of songs followed by Christian from Fear Factory. Hed put on a good show and I would definately go see the again. Didn't see their whole set, but I remember them playing Darky.
System of a Down
I went down in front for SOAD cause they are one of my favorite bands that are on the tour. They had several big walls covered in blown up newspaper and magazine headlines, adds and articles and a tree(!?!?) They opened with Suite-pee and I also remeber them playing War?, Know, Sugar, Peephole, Suggestions and one I didn't recognize (a new song maybe???). Serj said how we in Canada are lucky not to live in a "facist dictatorship" like America. Before War? he went into a rant about the CIA and got everyone to chant "Fuck the CIA" several times. I could hear several other people signing along to the songs. I would definately go see SOAD again if Igot the chance.
Slipknot
I went down in front for this crazy band too. The pit was brutal. Slipknot are a nine piece band consisting of two guitarists, a drummer, two extra precussionists, two DJs, a bass player and a singer. They all wear orange jumpsuits and each one wears a different mask. Their style of music is very hard to describe but they rock. The vocals are rap like sometimes and screaming and normal singing at others. One of the percussionists kept on splashing water on the crowd and the back of one of the security guard's head. If you get a chance to see this band go! They put on an excellent show and I am planning on buying their CD. The two songs I know they played are SPit it Out and Surfacing.
Godsmack
I missed the start of Godsmack because it took me quite a while to get down to the mainstage. Godsmack were a quite good Alice in Chainsish band. They are heavier than Alice in Chains though with James Hetfield ish vocals.
Puya
Puya are perhaps the most bizzare band on this tour. They were heavy screamy metal with Salsa parts in their songs. Yes you didn't missread. I said Salsa. I didn't see their whole set because we wanted to avoid the bottle neck to get down to the mainstage to see Primus.
Primus
The best onstage quote of the concert belongs to Les Claypool of Primus. People in the audience were throwing hard objects up on stageand he said, "I heard that throwing hard things at people on stage is a sign of small genitalia, so if you have small genitalia keep it to yourself." Primus was awesome and I would definately seer them again. I don't remeber most of the song they palyed but I do remeber them playing My Name is Mud, Jerry was a Race Car Driver and a new one called Anti Pop. Buckethead came out and played with them(he wears a mask and a KFC chicken bucket on his head).
Static-X
Static x are another band who I wish I saw all of but didn't to beat the rush for Slayer. They are a techno-metal type band and were pretty heavy. Their vocalist/guitarist's hair stood straight up about three feet in the air. If this band returns to Vancouver or God forbid comes to Victoria I would like to go see them again.
Slayer
I was in the bleachers for Slayer because I wanted to get to Fear Factory without missing any of their set. Slayer were even better this time than the last time I saw them. The fact that I had earplugs this time may have had something to do with that. From what I could see and what I heard from other people it was pretty insane down in front. If Fear Factory wasn't on right after them I would have been down infront but I am a huge FearFactory fan and didn't want to miss any of their set. Slayer opened with Raining Blood and proceded to play Bitter Peace, Stain of Mind, Chemical Warfare, Dead Skin Mask, South of Heaven, Manditory Suicide (I think), Angel of Death and maybe one or two more I don't remember. To my disappointment they didn't play Postmortem or Gemini.
Fear Factory
As Fear Factory are one of my favorite bands I went down in front and ended up fighting to remain close to the stage throughout their set. This was my second time seeing Fear Factory and they kicked just as much ass as last time if not more. They opened with Shock but this time I didn't notice the bass blast as much as lasty time. I rember them also playing: Self-Bias Resistor, Demanufacture (great audience participation bit with the "I've got no more goddamn regret...." part), REplica, Edgecrusher(joined by a bunch of people on stage, can't remember who they were), Scapegoat (sounded different from last time but I can't quite put my finger on it. I think maybe they palyed a different mix of it!?!?!?!), Cars (they shouldn'thave palyed this imo. They could have played Securitron or something old like WOE instead), Descent (Right after Cars. Two softer songs in a row???? What were they thinking??? they should have been spaced out more in the set), Martyr and maybe one or two more I don't remember. After their set I got Dino to sign my ticket stub. I want to see FF again and again and again.
Deftones
I missed the first couple of songs while getting Dino's autograph including Root dammit!! Oh well. The first thing I noticed was that the Deftones have added a DJ to their live show whether or not he is a full time member I doin't know. Chino was standing up at the very front edge of the stage and everyonce in a while lowered his mic into the crowd so the could scream along. Sometime during their set someone threw somesort of mexicamn garment up on the stage and Chino put it on and commented on how he was wearing stuff from all his heritage both Hispanic and Chinese(he was wearing some sort of black Chinese outfit). They didn't seem to have as much energy as I expected. For some reason I picturied Chino jumping all over the place, not just standing there.I would like to see the Defones again sometime as is the case with most of the ozzfesrt bands. They played: Root, Be Quiet and Drive, Mascara, a Depeche Mode cover that CHino played guitar on, a new song that sounded quite good, but whose name I don't remeber, Around the Fur and some others that I don't remember.
Rob Zombie
Now I must say that I was rather dissapointed in the Zombie's performance. They seemed to make several mistakes and the stage set up wasn't very elaborate. I would like to see Zombie headlining where they wouldn't have to worry about upstaging the headliners, which I feel was part of the reason for the scaled down stage set up. Before Zombie came on the screen flashed ZOMBIE one letter at a time followed by "we are going to eat you". The Beginning of the End followed by the Call of the Zombie was played over the PA and the Zombie crew launched into Superbeast. Probbably the most annoying thing bout seeing Zombie live is the exclusion of some of the lyrics. The stage had oil drums all over and to big dice, two go go dancers as well as a platform with the number 666 flashing on it. There wasn't as much pyro as I expected. There were a few blasts of flames during several songs and two big X's that ignited during Whazt Lurks on Channel X. The songs I remember them playing were: Superbeast, Thunderkiss 65(when they were joined by Kerry King of Slayer), Meet the Creeper, Demonoid Phenomenon, Living Dead Girl, What Lurks on Channel X, Dragula as an encore as well as a couple more I don't remember.
Black Sabbath
After much anticipation, the legendary Sabbath came on. Sirens screamed and Ozzy ran onto the satge and yelled "are you gonna go wild for us tonight??" and Sabbath opened with War Pigs. Words cannot describe what it was like to see Sabbath. They blew away every other band at the show. I remember them playing: War Pigs, Sweet Leaf, Iron Man(the video screen showed some big metal guy fighting godzilla), Faries Wear Boots, Into the Void, Snowblind, After Forever, Children of the Grave, Electric Funeral, Black Sabbath(the videoscreen showed footage of a pretty evil looking devil) and Paranoid. They may have played more but I don't remember.
