Our lead analyst breaks down the first round with his thoughts on why some quality players slipped, and why some players skyrocketed.

By Brett White
Fantasy QB

Cleveland reports a rash of young Couch potatoes, the Eagle McNabb their man, and the Bengal's shore up a position that had been their Akili's heel.
RedZone's Fantasy QB Brett White looks at the effect of the
QB Class of 1999
and all the off-season moves on Fantasy Football.

Having a great signal caller in the NFL is crucial- someone who can lead the team to victories, run the two minute drill in Elwayesque fashion, and make the big play when needed is every GM's dream.  However, having a great QB in fantasy football is all about the numbers and how long you can hold off and get one in your draft.

Five QBs went in the 1999 draft in the first 12 picks;  What rookie goes into the best situation? Who will give you the most statistically? Who will not? What quarterback address changes will have the biggest implications on your fantasy football draft?

The Rookies

Tim Couch.

If the number one pick leaves a tainted feeling in your fantasy stomach, stomach this!  First, he will start tomorrow - his competition is Ty Detmer. Second, they will have to throw the ball due to a weak defense. Third, there are some good offensive minds in Cleveland under Coach Chris Palmer. Fourth, his bye week comes when most fantasy leagues are over in Week 17. He'll start by Week 4.

Donovan McNabb.
Ricky Williams should go here.  McNabb should beat out the Sister of the Poor recruits (Pederson, Hoying)they have over there in Cheesesteak land.  He will have his chance to put up Randall like numbers, it just depends on whether it's Randall Cunningham, or George Randle.

He is athletic, strong, possesses a great arm, and can create havoc amongst defensive units.  The problem is that Charles Johnson and Torrance Small suck!  Sure McNabb will play a lot of minutes, and he will be left out there for growing pains- it is really intriguing to see what he makes of these minutes.

Akili Smith.
I like him, period!  Put his ass out there and tell him to throw the ball early and often to his tremendous wide receivers- what little success Cincy had last year came from shots taken deep to Pickens and Scott. Now add Craig Yeast and all will rise.  Smith is raw as he started for only one year at Oregon, but he has the best chance to do big things this season of all the first round QBs taken.  Watch closely if he is christened a starter, and if you can get him in the 5th- 9th round pick- grab him!

Daunte Culpepper
Get him early… in a keeper league! Other than that he will simply  take up a roster spot.  In two or three years, realize he will be throwing the ball to Randy Moss.  But for 1999 it is obvious that he is 3rd on the depth chart with a very small chance of touching grass or turf this year.  He will be the most prolific passer in 2001!

Cade McNown
He should start for Da Bears, at least by week 4.  He could either be real good or real bad. He could either lead a Chicago resurgence (much like Plummer in Arizona) or he could be the next Steve Walsh and just look lost most of the time.  Be careful with him yet don't be shocked if he delivers early.

Free Agents

Get
Trent Green STL (Holt and Bruce)
Brad Johnson WAS
Jim Harbaugh SD(and then trade him after week 5)
Jon Kitna SEA ( because I said so, and I am good)

Avoid

Scott Mitchell BAL (he's fat and they also have Banks now)
Tony Banks BAL ( QB Roulette)

Rich Gannon OAK ( because he sucks)
Billy Joe Saints (because there are no points for handoffs)
