DANJA'S REVIEW OF RODGER CORSER Rodger Corser: Roger Davis
I've had the pleasure of being able to watch Rodgers' performance as Roger Davis grow and evolve (based on the character portrayal of Adam Pascal) from inception in Sydney, to the complex and multi-dimensional being he became in Melbourne. In Sydney, Rodger reacted rather than acted and even though his performance was to say the least convincing, it was basic. His portrayal of Roger Davis was nothing short of what I expected but it was nothing more. In Sydney I had the feeling that he was trying to hard to be Adam Pascal. He didn't truly find his character, although you could see and feel the pain of Roger Davis, but didn't move me as much as he could have. Rodger in Melbourne was a completely different performer. Maybe it was something in the Melbourne water but Rodger was phenomenal, his song "Glory" was astounding. The note he hits in that song sent shivers down my spine and were never matched in his Sydney performances. His version of "Glory" in Melbourne was more passionate and painful, especially on closing night when he had tears in eyes. Not once in the Sydney season did I see him in tears during the show. In Melbourne, things were certainly different. The first time I saw him perform at the Comedy Theatre, he was in tears by the time the song "Goodbye Love" had started. This NEVER happened during the Sydney season. It was obvious that he was more in touch with the character and actually felt Rogers' pain. To say that there was chemistry between Roger and Christine would have been an understatement, in Sydney there were sparks but in Melbourne it was a fully blown fire! Each glance and caress was meaningful and poignant. Their "Light My Candle" was playful and enchanting at the same time whilst the pain and rage they expressed in "Goodbye Love" was heart wrenching. Rodger's acting in Melbourne was far above that of his performances in Sydney, every action was his own. They weren’t just a reaction to the actions of the other actors on stage, they were carefully orchestrated to show the emotions of Roger Davis. Rodger's voice is without formal training (even if his Melbourne "Glory" seemed stronger and more refined) and that's part of his raw appeal. He always sings with power and passion and it's this power and passion that gives him such strong stage presence and as a consequence makes him so mesmerizing to watch. Watching his range of facial expressions and movements during the show, is almost as entertaining as listening to him sing. As a whole Roger Corser is an amazing performer and in my opinion a perfect choice for the role of Roger Davis. |
