Aladdin Game by THQ Reviewed by Adrock adam@dmgice.com Size: 2 megabits Save: None Released: 1993 Works with: Any Game Boy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: This game is based on the Sega Genesis version (By the team now known as "Shiny"), not the SNES version (By Capcom.) **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Well, sorry folks, it sucks. All the levels and action are there... except... It's running in ultra slow motion. It's barely playable at this speed. We are talking Mortal Kombat-type speed. I really loved the Genesis game. But this game can't hold a candle to it. You know, this really ticks me off! Why the heck is this game so slow? It could be good! I think it would be a great port if it wasn't so slow. Maybe they tried to add too many frames. I don't know. You can alternate between throwing apples and your sword by pressing select. Liked: If you can take the sluggish speed... this is an OK game. Most can't bear it. Hated: Tooo slow. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The game looks very similar to the Genesis game, which could be it's downfall. Most everything is there. Hmm. I have a theory. I'm not a programmer or anything, but it seems like whenever you convert a console game like Aladdin to a less advanced system like Game Boy... a lot of excess data from the original system must get tagged on with it in the conversion, that the GB can't even use. Remember how Jeff Frohwein worked on MK4? Remember the sluggish play of the MK series? Jeff made it a little better. My theory is that with a little work you can make a game look like this and play at a much better framerate. Plus the cart-size is pretty low... at 4 Megabits it might be faster. Anyways, aside from all that tech-talk, this game looks pretty nice. There are also lots of cinema scenes and stuff that go along with the game. Really good framework, if it wasn't so slow. Liked: Cinema scenes. Look very similar to Genesis version. Hated: Tooo slow. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: "A Whole New World" plays at the beginning. This song gives me shivers. The GB Version does as well. Some other songs are thrown into the game that you might also recognize, if you have seen the movie. Sound FX could be more elaborate. Liked: "A Whole New World" theme! Hated: Sound FX need work. Some sound delay at times... ? **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Well, this is the part that reminded me of Prince of Persia. Slow and painful. Aaaugh. Liked: Nothing. Hated: Everything. **************************************************************************** Improve: Hey, you know, it's not bad. It may not be ready for the general public, but it's not bad. If you add color, a little more detail, and dedicate this game to GBC's much higher CPU clock, you could have a drop-dead replica of the Sega Genesis game, and I would be happy. RIYL: Minigames, Getting Ripped off. **************************************************************************** Final Words: This game needs work still. Don't buy. THQ, work on this game! Now! **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: * Personal Opinion: * Total: 10 Final Score: %40 **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None
