Alleyway Game by Nintendo Reviewed by Adrock gbcam@hotmail.com Size: 512 kilobits Save: None Released: 1989 Works with: Any Game Boy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: This game is a blockbuster. That doesn't mean it did really well, it literally means you bust blocks. Um... let's have a look. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Have you ever played BreakOut? Super BreakOut? DX-Ball? Same concept. When you start play, Mario jumps into a cylinder shaped ship. Then comes the ball. You must hit all the blocks. The last one is always the toughest. There are 4 different kinds of stages. One regular style. Two is scrolling style. In three, the ceiling is caving in. And four is a bonus round. In the bonus round, you have a limited amount of time to get all the blocks, and the block doesn't bounce off when you hit it. Yeah, it gets old quick. Liked: Some variety. Hated: The last block. The last block SUCKS. And it gets more repetitive each time you play it. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: They keep it raw on the set. The graphics are real simple. Maybe some innovative graphics would help the gameplay a little. But... I don't think so. And is that ball hard to see? Maybe they should of put bigger balls in this game. Maybe even two balls to keep the action moving. Yes, they definetly need to work with the balls in this game. Liked: Average graphics for a first-gen game. Hated: It takes big balls to make a game of this stature good. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: If you hit a high block, a high note. Low block, low note. It makes music at the title screen, the beginning and the end. Ahem. Liked: At least when you hit a block, it makes different noises. Hated: Not enough good music and sounds. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: There are sometimes when you just can't hit the ball. Sometimes it slips. But it does respond OK. Liked: OK response. Hated: It slips, and has some impossible shots. **************************************************************************** Improve: I don't know, throw some Pokemon in it. RIYL: Breakout, Super Breakout, DX-Ball, Arkanoid. **************************************************************************** Final Words: If you plug it into a Super Game Boy, and play it with a stick, it feels like the arcade. It's easy for a sucker to pick it up and play. You can just sit there and play it for hours. But, you can also sit there and study for hours, and get a lot more done. Boo-hoo. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: *** Graphics: * Sound/Music: * Play Control/Game Design: *** Personal Opinion: ** Total: 10 out of 25.
