Battletoads in "Battlemaniacs" Game by Rare/Tradewest Reviewed by Robby Cox koi@magicnet.net Save: None Released: 1993 Works with: N/A **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: This was my first Battletoads game. I was amazed at the time of purchase, but how will I like it now? **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Battlemaniacs takes the Double Dragon formula and puts the Rare spin on it. There are the usual side-scrolling stages, but there are also some unique stages. There's one stage where you have to beat up enemies while riding a hoverdisc. There's also a hoverbike level and a level where you ride on checkers while avoiding playing cards. This is a very unique game based on an old formula. Liked: Unique gameplay. Hated: The hoverbike level is way too hard! **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: Battlemaniacs still looks good today. The graphics are 2-D sprites but they look great. The 'toads and their enemies are fairly large and well-detailed. The backgrounds are really cool. The unique levels are uniquely decorated, as well. Liked: Good graphics. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: Battlemaniacs has some great music. It's kind of 80's heavy metal, but the sound quality is pretty good for the SNES. The sound fx are great. Liked: Good music. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Battlemaniacs controls' are good. The main fighting controls are great. The controls for the hoverbike level suck. Other than that, the controls are fine. The game design is good, but there's not enough butt kickin' action. Liked: Good controls except... Hated: Horrible controls on the hoverbike level. **************************************************************************** Improve: Fix the controls on the hoverbike level...Ah, screw it. Ditch the hoverbike level altogether. RIYL: Battletoads series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Battlemaniacs is a very good take on the usual side-scroller formula. This is a very unique game that is a blast to play. You would be smart to check this classic out. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: **** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 19 out of 25 Final Score: 76 % **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None.
