Chrono Trigger Game by Square Reviewed by The Avardancer dmgice@yahoo.com http://members.tripod.com/cgb001/ Size: 32 Megabits Save: Battery, three slots. Released: (What year was it released?) Works with: Super Nintendo, Super Nintendo version 2. This review is an exclusive review for "Nothin' But Reviews". **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Chrono Trigger is a "Time-Traveling" RPG with character designs by Akira; the mastermind behind Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT. The game also features a new "Technique" battle system and umm... it isn't part of any series like "Final Fantasy", "Saga", or "Seiken Densetsu". **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Like all Square RPGs, the game is story driven. The story starts at the "Millenial Fair" and involves the main character, Chrono, who looks supsiciously like Goku. Anyways, at the fair, Chrono meets Marle, who looks suspicously like Chichi... a little. He then takes her with him to see Bulma's... I mean Lucca's invention. Which is a "matter transporter". Chrono tries it out and then Marle tries it out and all heck breaks loose.... then what follows is a whirlwind story that seems to draw references from the other series and stories that Akira wrote. If you watch enough DBZ or DBGT, than you will find astonishingly similar designs. (Look, Dodrio, Goldo, Napa, that dragon that Gohan found! Neat!) The game has an awesome story; but it is fairly linear and some "plot points" seem to be unresolved. The Battle System is one of the stars in the game; it has a "Technique" join system that allows up to three characters to combine their powers to pull off some VERY cool moves. The menu based battles seem more exciting with the awesome moves and the fact that the graphics completely aid the game. (In the next section.. I will go over the graphics.) The game also has EXTRA incentive to replay it! It has, not one, not two; but about ELEVEN different endings! They can be seen by beating the last boss at certains times in the game. The game allows you to start a new game with ALL your items, levels, and powers intact. :) Very sweet. The game also has a special bit near the beginning of the game.. if you behave in the fair... a later event will unfold differently than it would if you misbehaved. Liked: Innovative, good story, good characters, good fun, multiple endings. Hated: A little linear, not as deep as Final Fantasy 3 (FF6j) **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The game rivals a lot of Playstation and N64 games in this area. The graphics and animation are fitting and somewhat reminiscent of the Dragon Ball Z series. When Chrono launches his "Luminaire" attack.. I can not help but think of the DBZ series. :) The details are nifty. Like moving clothes, and signs. Colorful and pretty. The immaculate design shows through out the game. Excellent use of "Mode-7" rotation effects. Some nice prerendered graphics in places. Liked: Excellent immersive graphics. Hated: Umm.... nothing.... mmmkay? **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: This game is truly excellent in this area. The game features distinct themes for most all of the characters and the music ranges from soft and melodic to hardcore rock. (Sort of.) The music really sets the mood; although it isn't as good as the music in Final Fantasy 6; it IS well composed. The sound effects are put appropriate as well. Liked: It's good stuff. Hated: Umm... nothing. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: being a menu based game.. Chrono Trigger is easy to control. Square has taken the time to implement a lot of innovative elements into the game and has produced a truly monumental game with inspired brilliance. Liked: Innovative and easy to control. Hated: Some plot holes and pardoxes.. **************************************************************************** Improve: Tie up the loose ends.. RIYL: RPGS **************************************************************************** Final Words: Although, nowhere as deep or as long as Final Fantasy 3 (FF6j), Chrono Trigger manages to be an excellently replayable and memorable RPG. And it belongs in the collections of every gamer. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: ***** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: ***** Personal Opinion: ***** Total: 24 out of 25 Final Score: 96% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None.
