Duck Tales Game by Capcom Reviewed by Adrock adam@dmgice.com Size: 2 megabits Save: None Released: 1991 Works with: Any Game Boy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: This is game is an exact replica of it's NES counterpart. Which is awesome, because I loved the NES game. I don't remember how many times I rented this game when I was a kid, but it had to be quite a few. I liked the cartoon when I was a kid. It still comes on around here on the weekdays at 6:00, right before Pokémon. OK, so I'm not as attracted to the cartoon now as I was then, but the game rocks hard. Oh, not to mention, this game was made by Capcom. Back when they had the license to make Disney games. Capcom also put out some other cool games based on Disney, like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and Chip and Dale. Once companies like Disney Interactive and Virgin took over, the Disney games started to go downhill. Aladdin for Sega Genesis was a great game by the company now known as Shiny, (A Super NES version was also made, by Capcom, I liked both versions) but... After a while, games like Toy Story and Lion King started to come out, which were OK, but lacked play and replay value. Now, here come games like A Bug's Life, which don't give players squat. Gee, now that I think about it, A Bug's Life makes Toy Story look GOOD. Ah well, on with the review. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: I was surprised by just how much this game retains of the NES game. All five of the levels are there. These are pretty big levels. Plus there may be some instances where you have to go back to a level to complete a certain task needed for the current level. Somehow this game reminds me of Mega Man. Hmm... it is by Capcom. The presentation of the game, the enemies, the levels... it will be second nature to many Mega Man fans. The plot of the game is that Scrooge McDuck has to hunt out some treasures and retrieve them from different bosses. You'll also have to rescue some of your nephews (Huey, Dewey, and Louie), Launchpad... and they will give you clues about your journey. There are 3 different levels of difficultly, which would be Easy, Normal, and difficult. :) The game will take you across the world, to the Amazon, Transylvania, African Mines, the Himalayas, and the Moon. There are lots of hidden treasures and rooms. Plus, in some of the less linear levels, you may have to hunt out the bosses. Liked: Great gameplay, with lots of reasons to come back! Hated: Usually, games targeted at kids are supposed to be easy; this one's a little tough. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The graphics are nice for a first-generation game. Fans of Duck Tales, the "Quack Pack", Donald Duck, or anything else Disney, will like the graphics on this game. It looks just like the NES game, but with some noticable resolution changes. And, well... it's monochrome, of course. Liked: Graphics look awesome, true to the cartoon and NES game. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: Capcom is known for all the cool music. It even has the TV show's original theme music in it! I love it. The other in-game music is Mega Man type stuff, which is also good. The sound FX have been called "annoying", "tedious", and "not very good". But, I found them suitable. Liked: Capcom quality music, and suitable FX. Hated: Annoying? Maybe. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: The feel of the controls reminded me a lot of the Mega Man series. OK... I know I need to stop comparing this game to Mega Man. So I'm going to stop. Right now. Anyways, the character, Scrooge, is pretty big, so that means that it takes not a 1, but a 2-block gap for him to fall through. You have to pogo-bounce your way up to some places, which is cool. Your methods of attack are pogo-bouncing on the enemy's head, and hitting stuff with your cane like it's a golf club. It sounds weird, I know. Liked: It's got good controls, like most Capcom games do. Hated: Hit detection, in some areas...? **************************************************************************** Improve: This game is great! All I would add is color. Maybe more levels? RIYL: Capcom games, Mega Man, Chip and Dale, The Cartoon, the NES version. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Well, I see that this game got mixed reviews. Philip gave it an 80% and Robby gave it a 4%. :-P Well, I would have to agree with Philip on this one. Like Philip, I loved the cartoon when I was a kid. And playing the Game Boy version of Duck Tales brought back a lot of memories. (I'm a sucker for nostalgia.) Anyone who thinks of this game as a kiddie game should think again. This game has quite a bit of challenge to it. It might take some time to beat, because there are five big levels, no password, and three levels of difficulty! Try to look past the Duck Tales license. Look at the game. It's fun to play. Any fans of Mega Man (Doh! I promised I would stop!) will like Duck Tales! Trust me! As for Robby's review; everyone has a right to thier own opinion. Maybe I liked it so much because I liked the cartoon and the NES game. But personally, don't look over this game because of mixed reviews. OK? It's a lot of fun. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** Graphics: ***** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: **** Personal Opinion: ***** Total: 22 Final Score: 88% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None.
