Metroid 2: Return of Samus Game by Nintendo Reviewed by Adrock gbcam@hotmail.com Size: 512k Save: Battery, 3 slots Released: 1991 Works with: All **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Metroid is a cool game where you go around and shoot stuff. Do you like games where you shoot stuff? Well, that's a pretty open ended question... Everyone does. You play as Samus Aran, the girl with long hair and big eyes, wearing only a bathing suit. Now, this is no Lara Croft. In fact, instead of running around in her bathing suit, she has her power suit on. Not because Nintendo is against big chested females... just... because they respect women, and that is cool. If you don't think there are enough positive females in video gaming, check Samus. Getting off of that subject, the enemy of this game is no longer the Mother Brain, but a little lady known as Queen Metroid. Ever heard the phrase "The queen never shares the characteristics of it's offspring?" This queen is huge, looks nothing like Mother Brain or the Metroids, rather something from the alien trilogy, and is one of the hardest bosses of the whole trilogy of games. Also, you fight not on Planet Zebes, but on SR388, a planet that will drain water as you get further in the game. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: It plays like a cross between Metroid on NES and Super Metroid. The Samus character is big. Lots of weapons to collect and villians to seek out and destroy. 9 "areas" to search through (Press Pause and look in the right corner to see which level you are on.) 39 Metroids to destroy, plus the Queen Metroid. Liked: Really big game with lots of weapons, areas, and pitfalls. It will scare you and excite you. Hated: The areas are easy to get lost in, because for the most part, it looks the same. It's quite overwhelming, but don't let that turn you off from the game. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: As I said before, the game plays like a cross between Metroid 1 and 3. The characters are big and disgusting. Those slime dwellers that jump up and float down come to mind. Liked: Big Samus and gross enemies. Looks good on SGB and CGB! Hated: Everything looks almost alike. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The low energy beep is one of the most dreaded, almost SATANIC features of this game and many other Nintendo games. But the music is catchy and the sound is gripping. I love that suspense sound when you find a Metroid. Liked: Nice, Catchy Music. Hated: BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP BEEEP *Shut UP!!!! |X-0 * **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: It's pretty basic and easy. I wish there was a menu to keep track of a map and my weapons for me. As for the control, it'll play like Contra, but it's not Contra. Liked: Shoot-em-up Controls, feels natural. Hated: Menu Screen like Metroid 3's? **************************************************************************** Improve: They could make the stages look different... You can't tell a Brinstar from a Norfair since there's no color change. Needs a menu screen to keep track of progress, and a map. RIYL: Metroid, Super Metroid, Mega Man Series. **************************************************************************** Final Words: It's a classic. Go out and get it. Keep at it, and you'll beat it... I know it seems kind of repetitive but stay focused. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: *** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 19 out of 25 Final Score: 76% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None
